I have a JBL 15" subwoofer with a blown amp. I replaced the amp with a Bash 500 and am not happy with the results. Can I replace the driver with another that would improve the performance?
I was looking at the Dayton RSS390HF-4 15" or RSS390H0-4 15"
They are both more than I want to spend, Is there a more economical option that would do the job?
Andy.
if it's the PE bash 500, it's got a 30hz high pass stock. you might want to read up on how to change the freq of the high pass, and change it to a sub-20hz filter before you replace the driver (which presumably you were happy with prior to the amp burning out) as any driver with that 30HZ cutoff is going to make you unhappy.
that high pass eliminated that amp from consideration for me because I didn't want to get into soldering electronics yet...

What exactly about it were you unhappy with?

I don't have much experience with that amp, but if it does have a built in 30hz high pass filter, then I can see why you wouldn't be happy with the results.
As for another woofer that will work, check out the Mach 5 audio 15", http://www.mach5audio.com/index-2.html

Man, that simply doesn't make sense. Why plant a high pass filter at 30Hz on a plate amp designed for subwoofer duty?

Good question.
I am getting ready to fire up my first DIY sub this WE (I hope). I also have the BASH 500... should I be ready for some disappointment because of the highpass filter?
If needed, I will change the resistors but I am not looking for doing it!
Mark,
If you read all these forums as I know you do, there are so many that want a woofer not a subwoofer, the music heads, stereophiles if you would. I love my music, but I want those lower octaves. So I want a SUB woofer, hell any damn fool can build a woofer. There was a time that when you bought your stereo pair you got woofers. I had four 15" woofers in my Altec Lansing Voice of the Theater Pair. And when the TS alignment stuff came along I turned those tiny 11 cubic foot cabinets into an equalized reflex alignment tuned to 15 hz (my equalizer just happened to have a band at 15) to get some of the SUB out of those woofers. Worked very well indeed as long as I kept the power in check.
