Toshiba's SED TV drops out of CES

Well, it looks like Toshiba will not be showing off its vaunted SED technology at CES in 2007.

The good, it's not technical.
The bad, it's legal.
Legal can take much longer than technical.

Item recently posted on the SED flat panel thread quotes Toshiba President: SED will only be available as as a very high priced item for professional uses. They plan to sell displays for Professional Video displays, and do not have any plans to introduce Consumer version of SED for the foreseeable future. That is really the crux of why they cancelled at the last minute from CES. Not much point in demonstrating a product at a Consumers Show, that you are not going to make available to Consumers.

This will be a huge disappointment to many consumers. This runs totally counter to earlier claims that SED displays could be mass produced at costs lower than existing flat panel sets. I also have to believe that the claim that the reason is not technical is pretty bogus. IMHO Toshiba is hiding something and I think they're going to have to come up with better spin control than this.

On the SED thread it was suggested that this may have been a clever ploy on Toshiba's part to downplay potential future revenues. Lets hope , for our sake, this is true and Nano Poprietary buy it
