View Full Version : Image instability with VP50

My system configuration is as follows -

Panasonic Blu Ray Player output set at 1080p

IScan VP50 1.01 firmware

Panasonic AX-100 1280 x 720 projector

Constant image height setup with a Prismasonic Anamorphic lens

2.35:1 screen

Problem is as follows -

IScan output set to 1080p 24
framerate 60Hz - 24 locked
Aspect Screen 2.35:1 Display 2.35:1

Input aspect Frame 16:9 Active 2.35:1

The projector info states 1080p 24 is being input. The judder test pattern is stable.

This configuration effectively removes the judder otherwise seen. Good so far!

BUT - there are frequent episodes of image tearing and instability in the lower segment of the image (about the lower 20 %).

This _can_ be corrected by pausing and restarting DVD output.

It _cannot_ be resolved by turning the IScan off and on or freezing the projector input. PREP off or on makes no difference.

Is this an IScan firmware problem? Any suggestions?

The ability to framerate convert and eliminate judder was my main reason for buying the IScan.

Also have posted this to DVDO support

I've seen the same tearing effect when sending 1080p24 to the Sony Pearl using vp50 with 1.01 firmware. This time the source being a SDI'd Oppo 971 with 480i DVD.

I've yet to sit thou a film using a x24 framerate but on about 10-15 mins worth of testing it appeared using 1080p48 was more stable as 24fps produced these intermittent tears on the pearl. Will the AX100 accept any other x24 modes then 1080p24?

Craig fellow 2.40:1 guy here

I run 1920x800p, straight 60hz locked, if I unlock the framerate and set it to 59.94hz or anything else, I get the tearing in the lower 1/4th also

report your issue to DVDO and it will be fixed in due time ;)

The AX-100 can display a picture with x24 modes at 1080p 60 & 50 but it is juddery.
I will be interested to hear if the 48 framerate will be stable long term on the pearl. It can supposedly accept this frequency from looking at the specs (1080p 24fps).

The tearing I am seeing is intermittent and the picture maybe be stable for 20 minutes or so, It is corrected by pausing and restarting the DVD.

I have reported it to DVDO and hope they can do something.

From your replies it seems the issue is with the processor and not with the source or display. I assume this as we are all using different sources and displays. But what puzzles me is that the problem can quickly be corrected by pausing and restarting DVD output.

ailean, have you found this also?

I too have a VP50 going into an AX100U projector...

Just curious, why set the output to 1080p as opposed to 720p? I'm still playing with output options from the VP50 and any comments / suggetstions would be much appreciated.

Cheers...

For my Standard def sources ie DigTV and DVD, yes I output 720p from the VP50 and am very happy with the results.
I live in Australia and these sources are PAL at 50 Hz.

I also have a Blu Ray player which outputs at 60 Hz. This inevitably involves 3:2 pulldown and "NTSC" judder.
The VP50 is capable of framerate conversion of this signal to 24Hz to eliminate the judder of this process.
A display device needs to be designed to accept this signal and display it smoothly. For digital projectors some of the latest can do it eg our Panasonic AX100s and the Sony Pearl.
They accept 1080p-24 smoothly not 720p-24.

I am successfully outputting 1080p-24 (framerate locked to 48Hz an even multiple of 24) from the VP50 and most of the time the pic is excellent with no judder but I suspect further firmware update is required because the signal is not 100% stable. ie it 'jumps or tears" on occasions.

Hi Craig,

Sorry I haven't had a chance to try this again, the holiday bonanza of HD broadcasts has kept us busy with 50Hz stuff (just to stop the PVR from filling up! ;) ).

There's nothing on this week thou so I should get a chance to switch on the DVD player again and I'll see if I can find a NTSC movie to watch (after watching 1080i50 Return of the Jedi of course  ).

When I did test it I was chapter skipping thru T2 looking for panning shots, I noticed on some chapters it was okay but others I'd see tearing (@24p), this could be similar to your pausing as it would be forcing some resync to source in the VP50.

When I did the same again @48p it was okay and still seemed smooth on pans.

Although T2 is very wide so there may have been tears in the black bars, I'll try to select a 16:9 film to sit thru so the whole screen is active.
