Only LCDs blur/ghost, plasmas and DLPs don't.
Only LCDs blur/ghost, plasmas and DLPs don't.
LCD vs Plasma has higher rez (1080p)...that is affordable. No reflections. You can a get LCD 1080p TV that you can sit 3-4 ft (32"-37" even 42" if you really want that panarama view, health warning: 42"@ 3ft can cause neck strain... :D ) away when using a PC for gaming that is as good as most LCD Monitors.

if plasma is "sample and hold" display it will blur.
for dlp, i have heard many complaints also.

I'm not sure what you are suggesting by "if" or what complants you heard, but again neither plasmas or DLPs ghost/blur.
Sed may have a future.
bad news today from toshiba....sed will not be sold to consumers. sed is dead officially. check the "official sed thread". holy smokes i may be using my 21" crt for another 5 years... :(
is crt king?
YES, certainly it is in my world; folks, for pc-gaming there's just nothing better; and really, c'mon, look locally for used 21" trinitrons, i keep finding them all the time; got a sony g520 21" beast; $800 retail, got it from a dude in mint condition for $90 cash; blows me away; even is wonderful for xbox360. though i loose a little size because of widescreen
anyway, save yourself the trouble and go hunting locally for a back-breaking trinitron; they're the best displays in the world as far as i'm concerned

I loved my trinitron, but anyway, since you are in the HTPC area I assume you are talking about large displays. Make sure you aren't going to introduce any latency with filtering or scaling, there are some threads around that discuss it in detail.
I use a LVM-42w2 which is 1080p (accepts 1080p on dvi, vga, hdmi and component), and other than the fact that I often have to powercycle it when I change resolutions it is great attached to my htpc. It is listed as an 8ms display, and while I don't have a way to verify that claim, I have seen no ghosting. Only fps game I have played on it was CoD2 (at 720p), and I haven't seen any ghosting at all, I have seen ghosting before on other displays (cheap 17" lcds).
If you were out here asking for the best pc monitor, I would say a nice 22" crt, but since this is the htpc area LCDs can work great.
I assume you are talking about large displays.
i really want to move up from 21" crt

we actually have this tv (bought last year) with hella ghosting. yours might be newer but im not gonna argue...
c'mon, look locally for used 21" trinitrons
i keep hearing crts are rare now...why are ppl buying used ones. you know viewsonic sells 21" crts..viewsonic (http://www.viewsonic.com/products/desktopdisplays/crtmonitors/graphicseries/g225fb/)

ok
seriously, you might have a non 1080p westy monitor, but i honestly havent read a single negative comment about those when compared to others in its class.
of course, i dont have one my self, yet anyway, so im just saying from what ive read and heard.
..when compared to others in its class.
yep, compared to other lcds (which all ghost - is the problem)
here is the only hope for LCD if it is ever going to display motion like a CRT - linky (http://www.behardware.com/articles/641-1/1rst-lcd-at-100-hz-the-end-of-afterglow.html)

LCD computers monitors always have, and still do, look like crap to my eyes.
Trinitron CRT is the gamer's monitor

I do like CRT's more. I went from Viewsonic CRT to Viewsonic LCD about a year ago. I do feel the LCD is less responsive, but honestly, I can't say I've ever felt there was any ghosting. I mean if you swing your hand in front of your face quickly you'll see ghosting!
I also run BF2, COD, etc on my Panny 900u and have ZERO complaints.
I think "ghosting" is not really a significant issue when choosing a gaming display unless your talking about some piece of junk lcd from ages ago.

while I do think that for pure image and desktop gaming, CRT is King, quality LCDs with fast refresh rates do very adequate jobs on gaming. I made the sacrifice a while ago that deskspace was more important that ultimate image quality and haven't looked back. I even turned down a free 21" Trinitron from my neighbor who is also an LCD user now.
It's always a game of tradeoffs.

You must be playing the games very fast. I've been very satisfied with Dell's LCD monitors. I have the 2405 and the 2407. Both dont show ghosting at my gaming speed, but then you might be lightening fast.

basically every LCD manufacturer comming out with 120hz/LED LCDs this year thinks different (http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/01/07/jvc-unveils-120hz-clear-motion-drive-for-1080p-lcds/)

I would venture that perhaps the idea is to make the potential customer think differently and preceive value, and hence sell the evolution of a product and earn some money. In addition there may be some value over the typical television pannel performance or when dealing with interlaced inputs a la 1080i video. At least for good computer LCD monitors ghosting hasn't been an issue for a while. I can't remember the last review of a new monitor that complained of it or the last time I saw someone complaining.

I use a 32" HP LC3200N as my primary display. Good price. Ton of ports. Great styling. The resolution is a little low at 1366x768, but it will do me good until their new 1080p 37" displays hit the street.
Sometimes I do miss CRTs, but since I don't work in a mixed environment anymore (no CRTs or Plasmas in my house either) I don't really notice the difference in display response or black levels.
...I also try to stay out of the TV section at Best Buy. Just one look at a 50" 1080p plasma display will ruin me forever...

this was posted in the gaming forum because i was hoping to hear from gamers not average consumers... most if not all professional gamers (toxic, fata1ity, lost cauze, socrates ect) use CRT now. in fact when LCDs replaced CRTs at last month's CPL tourney (due to sponsor pressure), it was not well recieved... here (http://www.gotfrag.com/quake/story/35894/) and here (http://www.gotfrag.com/quake/story/35930)
Johan "Toxic" Quick (WSVG Grand Finals) comments (http://www.ggl.com/news.php?NewsId=4321) after the win last month -
"...I don't believe TFT is good enough for pro gaming at this time. It doesn't matter if the time to update the screen is fast. If you can't have 120Hz on the monitor it doesn't matter at all because when they use TFT's, the skill of the players sinks a lot and it will not be as interesting to watch if the skill level goes down."
obviously there are other issues with LCD.
top gamers sum up LCD (http://www.sk-gaming.com/feature/645/1/)
ok that one is a year old but the tech hasnt improved as much as you might think. here is a quote from a more recent interview (http://www.behardware.com/articles/613-8/the-last-crt-survey.html) with fata1ity:
"Jonathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel only plays with CRTs. The problems for him are afterglow and the lower frequency of images"
i dont know what reviews you read, but go to the serious sites - those that do actual testing instead of just throwing out opinions. these sites (behardware, tomshardware, x-bitlabs ect.) also cater, at least partly to gamers and take ghosting issues more seriously. you will find none that put LCD on the same level as CRT for gaming for multiple reasons besides ghosting.
the opinion that LCD needs to improve is comming from many legitimate sources, including people like myself so i disagree that manufacturers are trying to "preceive value". there is a real need for the technology to evolve.
having babbled all this, i dont want to have a CRT vs. LCD thread. just looking for a monitor good enough to replace my small 21" CRT. LCD, rear projection or whatever it might be.

lol - i have a 42" 1080p lcd and a 42" plasma. i game on ps3 and highend pc on both. both were plenty "good enough" to replace my 21"viewsonic monitor. games are more immersive and exciting on a big screen flat panel. i would never go back to some tiny crt b/c of some ppl obsession with ghosting or whatever. its ridiculous really. i see some minor ghosting on my lcd but not on my plasma. still i'd never go back b/c i'd be missing out on years of fun and excitement with hdtv.
to the op - buy a plasma and enjoy games like never before.
