View Full Version : PS3...how warm is too warm? other questions inside
hays0023 12-25-06, 07:18 PM I just posted this in the PS3 forum, but wanted as much input as possible...
My lovely wife bought me a PS3 for use as a blu-ray player and it gets HOT! It is in a cabinet that has great ventilation via the front + back, but it is warmer than both of my HT amps put together. I touched it this evening after watching an episode of 24 and thought I was going to burn my hand....The fans are going non-stop and are LOUD as well. Do I have a defective unit? Should I be concerned? Since I am planning on only using it for blu-ray, should I return it for a stand-a-lone?
Sorry for so many questions, but thanks in advance!
you may have a defective unit, because PS3 doesn't get hot if it's properly ventilated, and my PS3 is as quiet as a baby......when sleeping :D
It seems to vary but I felt the PS3 that I had ran a bit on the warm side and I could easily hear the fan. I had it installed on a cold wood floor out in the open btw...

His unit is not defective! These things simply run hot and loud. I sold mine because of it. Too loud for a home theater system. Too hot to put in a cabinet behing glass.
xradman 12-25-06, 09:14 PM My unit is not hot. It is however little louder than my HD-XA1. I initially had it on it's side on top of XA1, but noticed that it got warmer than I wanted in addition to heating up the top of XA1. So I now have it vertical, and both bottom of PS3 and top of XA1 are at room temperature. The side of PS3 (bottom on horizontal placement) is the warmest part of the case, but definitely not hot.
You can search under my name to find my thread on this topic.
At the end of the day I have the following information for you:
The PS3 runs hot when in use. Even in idle mode when you're not doing anything with it. You need to have it in a well ventilated area. It cools itself better when standing upright. Warm to hot air will be exhausted continuously while its on. Remember this thing contains a powerful CPU and GPU both of which create extreme heat even while not working hard. Much more heat than your amps. In fact - a CPU/GPU create more heat per square inch than just about anything on earth!
Having said that - the PS3 uses a 160mm fan and is extremely quiet unless its being taxed for example playing a game. Assuming your area is as well ventilated as you think - you may have a defective unit.
To test it - just take it outside your case and see if it gets loud and hot while in idle mode or playing a movie. It should be quiet as the fan will be running slow.
Sony is replacing mine under warranty and paying shipping both ways but I'll be out a unit for about a week.
kamenkider 12-26-06, 11:32 AM My PS3 runs very quiet, but it does blow out very warm air from the vents after only an hour or two of use. I have my unit sitting horizontally, so maybe standing it upright may make it run cooler. I'm waiting for a vertical stand to come out before I do this though. Anyone know where I can get one?

It's more or less a super computer. You can't put it in ANY type of cabinet.
It really should be on an open shelf.
The cooler the environment the quieter it will run.
I also raised mine on 4 feet for extra air flow under.
The unit is not flawed, it is what it is. A super computer in a small package with self adjusting fans. Treat it accordingly. Not like a $100.00 CD/DVD player.
Try putting any modern computer in that cabinet and watch what happens.
David_T 12-26-06, 04:17 PM Does warm air blow out both sides? I have mine horizontal and there are only fans blowing out the right side.
aaronwt 12-26-06, 04:22 PM My PS3 is horizontal and Very hot air comes out of the back and the right side. The unit itself doesn't get hot at all, just very hot air is expelled. And my Ps3 is quieter than any of my HDTiVos or my A1.
hays0023 12-26-06, 04:31 PM Warm air was coming out of both side and back. I was able to return it and get my monies back. It wasn't so much the heat, but the dan that sounded like a hairdrier.
Thanks for all of your help!
hays0023 12-26-06, 04:31 PM Oops...not dan, but FAN...darned blackberry!

Hello did you read my post? I can completely understand returning it if it does not meet your needs but the hairdryer effect is not normal unless your well ventilated cabinet is not actually well ventilated.
sean_w_smith 12-26-06, 09:45 PM seems very weird how people are getting such varied results...
played movies for 6 hours straight and it blows warm air out but the case is not HOT and I can't even hear the fan. Its quieter than my Samsung DLP RPTV, My HD-Tivo and my xbox...
Its the quietest component I own that has a fan in it....
very weird that some are so loud when mine is quiet....

Mine is pretty quiet but runs very hot in my home theater closet.

I have build computers for years and have seen this variance quite a bit in regards to heat. In the loud units, its a simple matter of the fan running faster than it should. Assuming they have adequate ventilation, there could be a lot of different things causing this such as...
A sensor making an incorrect reading
A controlling software glitch
Incorrect seating of the heatsink in CPU and/or GPU
Incorrect intergrated heatspreader seating on CPU itself
CPU/GPU heat output variances
As time goes on you would expect this kind of thing to decrease but of course you will always have the various perceptions as to what consitutes loud.
BigMikeATL 12-27-06, 11:05 AM Sitting horizontal, the right side gets hot. Setting the unit vertical seems to make a big difference and the entire unit is cool everywhere.
Neo1965 12-27-06, 11:37 AM It is quieter playing a movie than a game, but this thing should not be placed in an enclosed space behind glass. You also have to have lots of clearance (3"+) to the 'exhaust' side :).
It behaves like a typical laptop, unfortunately, but it is usually quieter than a laptop.
csmith75 12-27-06, 01:15 PM I just bought one from Best Buy today and the cashier told me I should buy their warranty because there have been a lot of reports where the unit has gotten so hot it's melted the case.

That's kind of funny, as I see you're from PA. I picked up my PS3 from Best Buy last Monday and the cashier told me the same story. Wonder if we had the same guy, or if its Best Buy policy in this area?? I'd never heard the melting story before (or since).

you say that it's well ventilated front + back, but if you lay it down, the exhaust vent is on the right side of the power button IIRC.
i don't have any heat issues with mine, but mine is stacked in an open rack.
WaveyD4vey 12-27-06, 03:46 PM i dont know why some people say the PS3 doesnt run hot...i have yet to see one that wasnt as hot as a furnace

i've never said that it doesn't get warm or hot. i just said i have no issues with mine regarding the fan noise or heat. and i've always attributed that to where i placed my PS3.
so to make it clear, my PS3 does not get loud, yet i'm not claiming it to be silent. My PS3 does not get hot enough that i have experienced any heat related issues. and no, i wouldn't describe my PS3 ever getting as "hot as a furnace"
dsg2003gt 01-04-07, 11:27 PM mine gets warm and looks like the case has somewhat seperated on the right side near the power button. The plastic piece that the power button is on has a slight gap probably about .5-1 mm wide.

Mine expels very hot air but the case is barely warm when you touch it.

Your unit is broke then, because it does NOT get hot. You do know you need 4'' of space on the sides, maybe you had the right side up against a wall
PS3 has CELL and RSX, its going to blow hot air out. hddvd uses a P4 :D
csmith75 01-05-07, 06:30 AM I rarely ever hear my PS3 (or maybe I'm just deaf from my 360) and haven't noticed it getting TOO hot. However, I don't have it enclosed behind glass. It's sitting on a dedicated shelf with plenty of room on all sides. I've learned my lesson from the 360 and know these things need air. I wouldn't dare put either of these behind glass or on top of any other electronic equipment.
rwestley 01-05-07, 06:48 AM I am wondering if Sony fixed the heat isssue with the later releases of the the PS3. I purchased mine without the free disk just before Christmas at Walmart. My unit only gets warm, it does not get hot. I would be interesting to see when the units were made and if Sony fixed the heat issue.
psujohny 01-05-07, 07:15 AM His unit is not defective! These things simply run hot and loud. I sold mine because of it. Too loud for a home theater system
Why would some people lie and say there unit is quiet and doesnt run hot ? ..what would they have to gain.
This is the quietest piece of equipment with a fan that Ive ever had period. Literally I cant hear it from more then about 2 feet away. As a side note, My sons xbox-360 is a whole lot louder. Hes actually had two xbox 360's ( first one bite the dust ), the first was fairly quiet and the new one he just recieved is much louder then the first.
Secondly, The case on the ps3 barely gets warm. Sure, theres hot air blowing out ( not that freakin hot ) but its SUPPOSED to blow out.
I accidentally left my unit on for almost 2 straight days, when I came home and saw it on I freaked out. Well guess what ..No problem, it was barely warm and I didnt have a single issue with it.
It must really vary from unit to unit, thats the only explanation.
jsb_hburg 01-05-07, 07:47 AM My PS3 is quite and expels warm air at the top and rear. It sits vertically in an open area. The case is cool to the touch except for the top and rear-center where it feels somewhat warm to warm.
My PS3 is probably the most quiet piece of AV equipment I own. Yes there is hot air that is being blown out, but thats what it is designed to do, just like hot air is being expelled out of my PC. I would believe that having the PS3 sitting vertical would be the best way to ventilate it as the hot air rises, and there is a vent at the top rather then sitting horizontal and have it forecfully blow the air out the rear and right side, but I doubt that would be a problem also, it just seems standing vertical it would vent much easier.
rwestley 01-05-07, 01:14 PM As I stated in a previous post I am not having heat issues. I have seen units becoming very hot and I am wondering If Sony fixed the problem after the initial release. I hope that those who just purchased their PS3 reply about the heat issue.
Fettastic 01-05-07, 03:20 PM There isn't an Intercooler available for this thing yet is there? I'm definitely buying one becasue the air it shoots out could roast marshmallows.
Fettastic 01-05-07, 03:30 PM AH HA! The Intercooler for PS3 comes out in a couple of weeks. You can preorder it here:
http://www.amazon.com/NYKO-TECHNOLOGIES-83010-Playstation-Intercooler/dp/B000KIPDZO/sr=1-100/qid=1168028890/ref=sr_1_100/103-0270073-6656653?ie=UTF8&s=videogames
It doesn't get hot; it expels some hot air but is the quitest AV equipment I own. My 360 in comparison sounds like a jumbo jet.

mine too.
My PS3's fan seems to run at the same speed all the time. Quite loud IMO. I don't notice the fan noise getting softer or louder no matter how long I've been playing or how many movies I've watched. I've noticed that the discs come out very warm and am hoping the discs aren't being damaged by the heat.
