View Full Version : Sirius for Christmas - Want to listen at work
ClubSteeler 12-27-06, 09:33 AM Cool Gift - Sportster replay and 1 year of programming. Now the unfortunate part is that I only havew a 10 minute commute to work. I would love to be able to listen at work, but I work in a block building with no windows, and against company policy to stream audio over their internet connection.
Any creative ideas how I can listen at work?
I have the SUBX1 boombox with the standard antenna and received zero reception in my bedroom with the antenna pointed at the window. The antenna has to aimed in the general direction of the satellite, which in my case is West. Unfortunately, my window is looking East so I had to put it on the roof to get reception.
I received Sirius as a Christmas present too, so my knowledge is limited, but if you're in an office with no windows there may not be any options. I love it, but the service seems real restricting when it comes to getting a signal.

Depending on where you work, how close you are to a terrestrial repeater, and the material your building is made of, you may be able to pick up a terrestrial signal using the home kit for the Sportster replay. if you check out siriusbackstage.com you can find info on where the repeaters are in your area, and it's also a much better resource then AVS for Sirius. Enjoy your Sirius, once you start listening you'll never go back.
ClubSteeler 12-27-06, 03:15 PM Thanks....
No repeaters in my area :(
Not only that, but getting a lot of interference, seems like the FM modulator is extremely weak. If I set the radio on the car floor I get intereference. Tried several FM frequencies. I actually have to set the radio on the dash, near the car-radio antenna to minimize interference.
bjmedina 12-27-06, 03:53 PM For your car you need to add an Sirius FM Wired Relay. This is a box you add inside your dash that directly connects the FM out of your sportster replay to the FM antenna. When the Sirius is turned on it cuts out most of the FM signals, and clears up the static experienced by your sportster replay.
I recently replaced my Sportster under warranty, and the new one has a transmitter with signal strength much reduced. However, after I added the FM Wired Relay, it sounds great again.
Where did you find that info about repeaters at siriusbackstage ????
ClubSteeler 01-02-07, 09:11 AM I didn't.
But I did find this:

Why don't you just listen through the website? That's what I do at work. Signing up is free if you already have a paid subscription. You don't get every single station, but you get most of them, including both Howard stations online.
My wife and I got the Sirius Sportster Replay for Christmas, with the additional Home Docking Station (With Home Antenna), and the thing is amazing: It seems to work everywhere! Plus it sounds great, too. When we first got it, my father-in-law just sat the antenna in the front-room window (it faces South) and it worked instantly. Then we tried it in the car, and through an FM station, it worked just as good.
The BIG test was going to be at my wife's office. She has a cubicle, with narrow windows that go all around the entire main room (but with no actual view of the sky), and I was really very doubtful that we'd get any signal at all...And like you, my wife isn't allowed to stream over the internet, so the Sirius was really meant for her at work...But when we plugged it in, it was an instant 3-bar signal!! My jaw literally dropped. There must be a repeater close by, because like I said, there is no view of the sky. Plus, I tried putting the receiver under my shirt, and still got a signal. So obviously a repeater in the area would make all the difference.

Definitely a repeater near you.
I have no repeaters, and no sirius without a clear shot of the sky.
I've decided to record 90 mins of Stern onto a cassette at night and listen next day. Best I can do right now. Next year, when the Stilletto drops way down in price, that will probably be the best solution for recording.
How it all works is a mystery to me...I'm sure some secret government agency uncovered an entire Radio Shack in the cargo hold of some alien spaceship at Area 51 back in 1950.
Oh, and I meant to say that I put the antenna (not the receiver) under my shirt, and still got a signal. Pretty cool, anyway. If you're lucky enough to be near a repeater, guess. Don't give up hope yet. Maybe your area will be getting one soon, too?

You're putting satellite radio onto casette?? Wow. Maybe XM will work better for you indoors? Usually does... unless you feel you need to listen to Howard Stern (although torrentspy works well for that anyway).

YEP.... NEED to listen to HOWARD....
It only took 5 minutes and I was completely hooked once again.
Can't stream at work, only dial up at home. So yeah, I'm jumping back 20 years in time and putting him on cassette...

Funny, I used to do the same thing. And still could for that matter.
Sony used to make a DUAL WELL CASSETTE RECORDER(TC-WE675) that may still be available somewhere. I don't know.
I know Circuit City still carries it's brother(TC-WE475), but that one only had one recording well.
Anyway, I used to record up to 4 Hours of the show because of work.
The Sony had a great feature of relay recording. Stick in two 120 min tapes, and once the recording was done in Cassette Well A, it would automatically kick in and start Cassette Well B, and then stop when the Well B tape was done.
A little over 4 hours.
But like you, I think I will wait until the end of the year when the price on the Stilletto 100 comes down to a reasonable price, or something else is made that is either better or more suits my needs.
Probably next Christmas time.
