Best Buy has what appears to be a steal for $999:
Klipsch Synergy Series Quintet III 5 piece system
Klipsch sub-10 sub
Yamaha htr-5940bl
Yamaha dv-s5950bl

I just bought a 50" Panny plasma and would love to have HDMI sound as well, but it looks like this system doesn't support it. That said, the sound blew me away in the showroom at this price. Are there better options out there for same or less money?

I heard that system when I first started shopping around. My opinion was that it sounded good but not great, kind of "tinny", you know good on the highs but not much midrange. Probably from the relatively small (3 1/2") woofers. When they paired it up with the tower speakers I liked it but then it was more like $1500. By the way, it was the same price when I looked back in early November. From what I see after reading this board the general consensus seems to be go seperates with that kind of budget. Dig around here a while there are lots of threads with guys reccomending components for a grand or less. IIRC that price didn't include any of the cables either, whatever you do don't buy them from best buy. They wanted almost $300 for a 25' HDMI cable. I bought it online and a 25' component for $50. Their optical was $30, I got mine for $6. They kill you on the accessories.

Well I can't beat the price, but a system I have been looking at includes either the Onkyo TX-SR674 or the Denon AVR887 Receiver for ~$700, and for speakers+sub I chose the SVS 7.1 Speakers with PB10-NSD Sub for ~$1000. There is an option for the SVS w/sub on a 5.1 setup which will be cheaper. Of course these don't include dvd player. Try doing a search online for what best buy has and see if you can piece it together for cheaper, IMHO of course, but I'm no audiophile so don't quote me as knowing all there is to know :).

Try this

http://www.**********/products_product.php?section=speakers&product=92.1

And this for a receiver http://www.shoponkyo.com/detail.cfm?productid=TX-SR304S&modelid=50&group_id=1&detail=1&ext_war=1-

Or this for a little more http://www.shoponkyo.com/detail.cfm?productid=TX-SR504&modelid=57&group_id=1&detail=1&ext_war=1

With shipping would put you just over $1000. Sign up for club Onkyo and you will save $10.00 plus free shipping on the receiver.

My dream system on a budget, $989 for:
Onkyo TX-SR504 - factory refurb
(4) Athena AS-B1.2 - audioadvisor
Athena AS-C1.2 - audioadvisor
SVS PB10-NSD - svsound

That should rock pretty hard, no?

I was looking at a Denon receiver and saw this setup available at CC for $999:

anybody know if this receiver/speaker/player combo is good? It seems to have at least HDMI output (don't know about input)...

Just curious how that comes to $989?

The Athenas come to (120 x 4) + 150 = 630
And the PB10-NSD comes to 429

You can go to shoponkyo.com

That will get you to there page. Take a look around at what they have to offer. You can get some really good deals on the refurbished receivers. I got my close to a year ago, it looked new, and I have had no problems with it. Also there new line just came out not to long ago, you still may be able to get new just last years models.

Also, the X-Series stuff sounds great but the speakers are big  but if you have the room are worth a look. Go to av123's forum, you can ask for a demo in your area. Take a look at them and make sure you have room. I thought that I would point that out.
