My 2 year old 50" Samsung DLP tv is now randomly shutting off. This happened before, about a year ago. Back then, all they could find was that the bulb was cracked so they replaced that and it seemed to be fine. I've only used this tv a couple months out of the last year as it was stored in a spare room while I was living with a friend. Now it's doing the same thing again, just shutting off in the middle of a movie or tv program. Anyone ever experience this or might know what it could be? Of course my warranty is now expired so whatever it is will cost me. Thanks.

Could the power button on the set possibly be stuck partly and randomly powering the set off?

how often is it shutting off? Is it 1x per week or many times per hour?

I don't think it has to do with the button as the last few months it has worked fine. When you go to power it up again, it takes quite a long time and the word "lamp" flashes in green on the big power button on the front. The frequency of this problem varies. Sometimes it's just once in couple hours of watching it, sometimes twice, sometimes it doesn't do it. I do remember it getting a lot more frequent as time went on the last time this happened a year ago. If I do need to call a repair person, i have no idea who to call. Need to find someone knowledgable but not super expensive and in the Portland, OR area. Thanks.

I actually just got a Samsung DLP in December and it started doing this. I have a repair person coming tomorrow (it is covered under warranty thankfully).

 I bought my DLP in Dec also and after the second week of having the tv it started to shut off all the time. Had Samsung come out to repair it they replaced both computer boards. Within the week after repair it started to shut off again. Repair service is coming out again wednesday to replace some parts who knows which ones. Do you have any lights flashin on the front of your tv? I have the Temp and Lamp lights flashing when the tv shuts off. My tv shuts off all the time like 10 times or more a day. The repair guy said these tvs are having major issues with the color wheels and light engines.

yeah mine flashed the lamp light. They said it could be because mine was near a vent...but I have other issues. THe hdmi on mine is broke...and they are not sure if they can replace it. Just god damn wonderful.

Ha Ha Ha! I know the fix to this one! It's a power problem! Buy a surge protector that conditions the power (I bought a Panamax 4300) and I bet your problems will be solved!

I had this problem with both of my Samsung DLP's. Recently forgot about the problem and moved my Panamax upstairs to the bedroom.....all of the sudden my Samsung started shutting off...sometimes more than once a night.

Reinstalled my Panamax and haven't had a shutdown since. Remember, you need the power filtering circuit....not just the surge protector.

Please fill us in on just exactly what power conditioning is. This should be interesting. :D

Okay, I'll bite. I cannot explain what it is. Here's what I can tell you...I had an HLP5086 that kept shutting off. It started happening after I moved my television plug from my Panamax 5100 (or could be 5300) to a standard Panamax surge protector (with no filtering circuits). I bought a new Panamax 4300 to plug my television into and walla, the problem went away.

Two years go by and I buy a new HLN 5087. I plug my new TV into the Panamax 4300 and experience no problems. At Christmas I buy a Vizio for my upstairs bedroom. I decide to move my Panamax 4300 to the upstairs....I had forgotten why I bought the Panamax in the first place (it sucks getting old)!

Anyway, my HLN 5087 started shutting off on it's own and I remembered whole incident from a couple of years earlier. I reinstalled my Panamax 4300 and the TV hasn't shut off on it's own since.

My explaination, in non scientific terms, is that the Samsung DLPs are very sensitive to power fluctuations or noise, which causes them to shut down. A simple solution would be to try a protector that has a filtering circuit to see if it works for you! If you have doubts, buy from somewhere that has a 30 day return policy (like Crutchfield) if you don't believe it will work. As I mentioned previously my Samsung TV's started shutting down when I plugged them into the standard Panamax surge protector, so it needs to be one that has the filtering circuits.

I at first thought it might have been caused by not using a good surge protector, then I i went out and bought a nice monster power surge protector. It has the noise reduction filter on it and I also have my cable lines hooked into it. The first time I turned the power on it shut off, but once it did stay on the picture was much clearer do to the static noise filter. I have lots of space around the whole tv and there is on heater vent near it. Hope the repair wednesday can fix it.

Just make sure you don't have any other IR souces active in the room where the TV is such as flacy flourescent light bulbs, or remotes for other devicesor phones that may be triggering the Power function as if it was the remote for your TV.

I had this issue with my 2 year old HLP model. The service tech came out and replaced the lamp/ballast. He explained that there was a coating on the older model of lamp that would flake off and cause shorts resulting in the intermittent power outages. After the replacement, it hasn't happened once.

Well, mine has been broke since January...and I bought it Nov...what a waste. They are coming out to replace the DMD board or something and the ballast. already the main board and lamp have been replaced. I hope this thing finally gets fixed...I hate not being able to use it! It seems to shut off on the dot between 35 and 45 minutes of use...then comes back on and usually stays on...or sometimes it will just keep shutting down every 15 min afterwards...grrr

I have seen this problem caused by the optics unit.

My explaination, in non scientific terms, is that the Samsung DLPs are very sensitive to power fluctuations or noise, which causes them to shut down.

Samsung DLP's, much like most any other DLP set use a switched mode power supply to run the set. These types of Power supply's have been standard in most types of consumer electronics now for many years. The reasons are efficiency and ability to maintain a steady power supply voltage regardless of fluctuations of ac line voltage. I've run a switched power supply with a line voltage as low as 40volts AC without an effect on the operation of the set other than minor breathing.

If you had power supply fluctuations as bad as you think you're having you'd have light bulbs flickering, badly.

My HLP5063W was bought Jan 2005. Shortly after had the auto shutdown and the 3 blinking lights of death. Samsung replaced every circuit board that controlled the picture. It worked for a little over a year. Then Feb 2007 started shutting down again, same symtoms. Sat in repair shop 2 months, I had to find the parts for them. The repair only worked for a few months. Sept 2007 it started again. The BB tech says the DMD board is bad again. However no one can find a DMD board because Samsung is not making them and there is not indication they will ever make them again. I have been fighting with BB trying to get them to honor the lemon policy and replace the TV (it is still under extended warranty). However they say I have to wait 45 days from the time the tech was at my house and no part delivered before they will replace the TV. Bottom line is that this TV has been un-usable for a total of 6 months due to this defect. Also the rainbow effect was bad on this TV after the board was replaced the first time.
