I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but there is a firmware update for the Philips BDP9000 (12/19/2006) on Philips website:
http://www.p4c.philips.com/na4/b/bdp9000_37/bdp9000_37_fus_aen.zip
The zip contains an ISO file that I burnt on a CD-R with NERO.
The update itself went smoothly.

Don't quote me, but I think owners who apply this patch will suddenly find themselves able to watch The Descent.

"The Descent" works flawlessly on my updated Philips. Watched the entire thing last night (incl. extras).

Well, the entire upgrade process (status messages) looked strangely familiar to upgrading a Samsung player (which I did at a customer's house a few days ago). As it has been said on this forum before, the Philips BR player must be based on Samsung's BR platform.
One thing I noticed: After the upgrade, all adjustable settings are back to their default value (e.g. speaker sizes in the audio setup menu).
So far the Philips player has been performing really well - considering that it had the lowest MSRP of all BR players when I bought it in early November. No problems here. Although the Pioneer player's exterior design looks pretty "exclusive", I can not believe that it's performance would justify a $600 price difference over the Philips (or other BR player in this price range) when the player is set to 1080i/p and connected to a 1920x1080 display device (1:1 pixel mapping).

Just a quick question about downloading the update ...Is it correct that I should only burn the disk image to the CD? Or should I burn both the ISO file and the disk image? I'll be using a Mac and of course the directions are Windows related. Thanks!
Not sure how things work on a Mac, but the ISO file contains the disc image and that's what's extracted and burned on the disc directly from the ISO burning software. You shouldn't be burning (dragging and dropping) actual files on to the disc.

That's what I needed to know. Thanks!
