I have access to a 15" subwoofer from Earthquake the MKV15V for a little more than a grand. I just want too know would this be a better buy than a Velodyne or Sunfire as far as performance. I know that some of velodyne's sub's have a room correction feature. Is it possible that Earthquake's 15 is so beefy, that it can do just as good if not better without this room correction feature. I can get a good deal on all these brands, but I actually just want to get any ones input who has worked wiith all or any of these brands.
The large Earthquake sub will have more output than the largest Sunfire (Signature) down deep. For HT a very good subwoofer, for music it is very close to the Sunfire, you can do a good deal better.
Compared to Velodyne, depends. If you compare it to a HGS/DD Velo, the Velo will have better definition(control) .The larger HGS/DD subs will pretty much match the Eartquake in output. The upscale Velodyne subs are outstanding muisc subs, they are very accurate.SImply superior to the Earthquake.
And lastly,no matter how much power(ouput in acoustic watts) a sub has it will not compensate for room acoustics. A system like the built in SMS will help any sub.
For right at a grand, the Earthquake is a great buy. I had a MKV15 for about a year and a half and really, really enjoyed it. It will have more output than either the Velos or Sunfire for HT, and in my opinion is better than the Sunfire for music. It is really tough to beat a big, servo Velodyne for music, but the EQ can hold its own pretty well. For the price you can get it, you wont be disappointed and like TheEar stated, an SMS will do wonders. Good luck!!

Which sub is better for both music and movies? Earthquake, Velodyne or Sunfire.

Velodyne SPL-1500R
Maybe for music but for HT, the MKV-15 is the clear winner. That is unless the SPL-1500 can reach over 115dB at 25Hz measured at two meters in a large room. ;)

Btw, There is a MKV-15P on Audiogon right now for only $875 complete shipped anywhere in the US. For those interested, it's a great deal.

anybody try the new MKVI-15?
i'm looking for most bang for the buck...these can be found discounted off MSRP
I heard the MKVI at CEDIA here in Australia. They had a MKVI stacked on a MKV with a Kompressor 12" and the minime 8" stacked on top of that.
In terms of bass, the earthquake stuff blew everything else out of the water.
The MKVI has some serious stuff going on the amp. Phase control at 20Hz, 30Hz and 40hz. 180 phase. A Subharmics switch is also on the amp. the best part I liked was the XLR inputs.

how does the new MKVI-15 compete against the new hot subs?
like the JL Audio Fathom F113 or the SVS PB13 Ultra?
**the F113 is too pricey for me, and the PB13 is just too B-I-G

I've experienced quite a few movies with the MKV15 and I own a MKIV12. It's quite a nice sub though I do not know how it stacks against the others listed.
I actually won a Fathom F112 in a contest - should have it by saturday and would be interested to see how it compares, if at all, with the MKIV12.

Count your lucky blessings to win that Fathom. Good job!!
I own the MKIV12 and to be frank, it always disappointed me. I would think your quote, "If at all," would apply. I'm not trying to be a wise guy, but with my experience, they are on two totally different planets. Please let us know your thoughts when you do the comparison. YMMV.
Go play the lottery!! You are on a lucky streak!! :)

I don't know if you compare a sub in terms of clarity held at a show like CEDIA unless you in an enclosed room. The place is too open with too many variables and not much of a ceiling either.
I can say the room at Australia was about 80m long, (small compared to the states), I was in a dedicated HT room built and I could hear this rumbling and thudding......I searched and searched and eventually found it. It was the guys demoing earthquake at the other end of the hall. 80 meters way. I suppose that says something.

What type of room is your MKIV12 situated? Right now mine is in one of my spare bedrooms hooked up as part of a gaming rig. Prior it was in my old house's small living room in a very damped environment, 9 ft ceilings, in a corner. I thought the sub performed pretty well. I originally thought it was a little weak. For some reason my Yamaha's automatic calibration had dropped the LFE dB to about -5 and I hadn't realized it. Once I adjusted that to around -1 I really thought it had come alive. I still like it but my new living room is drastically larger - around 22 x 16 - compared to the old one - 14x14. I've yet to try the MKIV12 in my new living room - I'm running a B&W ASW650 in that room, which does well.
I have to trade off one of the two subs to my dad once the Fathom arrives. FYI - I won the sub in ModernHomeTheater.com's monthly giveway (August). They're giving away an Outlaw 970 preamp and amp combo this month. You guys should sign up and enter to win...:D
