Hi, I am looking for someone to repair and re-calibrate my Toshiba 50H81. It has been an awesome display until just recently. It has started to flutter/jitter vertically on the horizontal on all inputs. It responds to a whack on the chassis for awhile, but eventually starts fluttering again.

I am looking for someone to nail this for me and then re-calibrate the display without spending what a new one might cost me.

Any hints, tips, suggestions or names would be greatly appreciated! :)

Thanks for your time!!

Sounds like some loose solder joints in there somewhere. Could be an easy fix if it doesn't fry in the interim. I would hunt around for repair shops.

Thanks Chris. Would you avoid using the set, then, as a precaution? I do not want to do any more damage than may have already been done.

I am looking for a tech to, hopefully, repair it and then re-calibrate it at once. I am a bit leery of the local "repair shops".

Any leads would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks, again, Chris for responding. :)

Most ISFers are not repair techs. Some are, those may be repair techs who got into calibrating. Generally though, I'd keep the two jobs separate. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to avoid using the set until you get it fixed. As it stands now, it doesn't sound like anything is broken per se, but if things are loose in there and joints are coming apart, some nasty things can happen like spot burn or something which you don't want.

OK, Chris. Thanks for the great advice. I have located the closest Toshiba Authorized repair tech who is about 40 miles away. I will call them on Monday.

I want to thank you for your time, literally, Chris. With almost 12,000 posts, you are providing invaluable advice and guidance to suffering dolts like me, and I, for one, am immensely grateful for you guys who are always there to help us out with our problems.

God bless you, my friend! :)

Oh and hey, no need to flatter, most my my posts are useless idiocy! :D ;)

Someone like gregg with his puny 127 posts is probably a lot more helpful because he's not goofing off 99.9% of the time! :)

Bad solder connections at the vertical output IC are common on this set and easy to repair. The symptom is consistent with this. While I am a service tech who also does calibration, I agree with Chris completely that you should not expect most service techs to be able to properly calibrate your set. A good one will touch up the focus, convergence, and any gross gray scale anomolies, and clean the lenses and mirror, but many will not even do that, nor would I want them tweaking with gray scale much at all. Very few repair techs understand much about calibration beyond getting a more or less acceptable pix on the screen.

If you have any electronics soldering skills at all, this is an easy DIY repair, if you are inclined. It is also something that any good tech can do, not necessarily a Toshiba ASC.

BTW, the vast majority of Chris' posts have not been goofing off. There are some folks with lots of posts that are worth adding to your ignore list, but Chris is certainly not one of them and is being humble.

I was wondering if other owners of the 50H81 had been having the same problems that I am encountering. Thanks for the advice on soldering. I will leave that to more competent hands than these.

Overall, this has been an absolutely awesome display, especially after Gregg got his hands on it. I may be requiring his able assistance again in the very near future.

Again, thanks to all of you who are so generous with your time in helping others. I am sure that you will all be blessed many times over for your benevolence.

Happy New Year!! :D

I tell you what. You guys know your stuff, and you are usually right in your recommendations. "Bad solder connections at the vertical output IC" is exactly what it was on my Tosh 50H81. The set is fine now and has never looked better. Thanks again, fellas! You guys rock!!!!!!!! :D
