Am I doing something wrong or is this just the way the 30000U works? I have some DVHS titles recorded from HBO and my DVHS VCR will only output the recording via 480i. Do I have to get a different player to get these HBO recordings to output 1080i or is there a way to get my JVC 30000U to output 1080i?

Thanks in advance,
Jason

Did you record from HBO using firewire? Did you choose the HBOHD channel or the non-HD version of HBO to record from? You must view/record HBOHD if you want to get the firewire data sent out from the DVR/STB and on to the 30K via firewire input for digital recording of the HD content in anything other than 480i. And HBOHD is 1080i.

What is your source device... DVR/STB? What is your cable company? Firewire would be the only way you can record something at a resolution other than 480i, so I'm sure you must have done that.

How do you have your 30K connected to your HDTV? Component video or S-video? Obviously S-video output would be 480i so I'm guessing you must have it connected through component video.

What is your HDTV? Does it have YPbPr input for component, or YCbCr? Which one did you connect to if there was a choice?

Did you get into the setup menu of your 30K? I have a 40K so don't know if the setup options are identical, but in the 40K's menu for IN/OUT FUNCTION there is a "TV OUTPUT 1" setting that is crucial:

720to1080 up-convert 720p to 1080i, leave 1080i, 480i and 480p as-is

NO CONV 1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i are output to the TV as-is

ALLto480i ALL images will be output to the TV in 480i format

Assuming you recorded properly via firewire, and HBOHD is what you recorded or tuned to when you made your recording, it seems that "ALLto480i" must be your problem.

Easily fixed. Just change that setting.

The titles were all recorded from HBO-HD via firewire by someone else. I actually got a bunch of DVHS titles from another AVS member. Many recorded from Starz HD and Cinemax HD and these all output in hi-def. It's just the HBO recorded movies that wont output hi-def. The DVCR actually displays a message that says something like, "This program is copy protected, display set at 480i"

Just wondering if there was a way around it.

OH.
Then it means you have to use some digital (HDMI? DVI? etc) method to output to a compliant display.

I suspect you JVC 30k has not been upgraded to fix the 5c flaw.

How do I upgrade the unit? Is there a way to do this myself, or does it have to be upgraded by a service tech? Hopefully I can just flash the unit and be good to go.

No way to do it yourself as far as I know, I have sent several HM-DH30000U D-VHS machines to JVC for firmware updates.

From going to BB so often, I got to know a couple of the guys who worked in Audio/Video . About 3 years ago, one of them told me about a "killer open box deal" that their mgr had just put out. It was for a "perfect" JVC HM-DH30000U that had just been returned by some lady who could'nt "work it". The Mgr priced it for $250, but I was told he would take less because he "did'nt really know what the hell it was or did" and wanted to "move it out". I offered him $200 and he took it.

I did'nt know much about the unit either, as any/all research I had done up to that point 3 yrs ago - was almost entirely spent to know/understand HI DEF "televisions/display devices". I then needed to research audio, as I had not really tinkered with music or audio since graduating from college back in 1982. Needless to say, I had alot to learn! The bottom line - is that all I've done with the D-VHS 30K was "hook it up" to verify it worked.

Is it worth sending to JVC for the "updates" I just learned of and read about in the previous posts? What will, can or "should" they do to the unit? And, about how much should I expect to pay? Where do I send it?

Thanks Tons......as I would really like to "get into" and learn how to utilize this device and record some Hi Def. Incidentally, how is the "audio" quality?

I have a JVC 30000 that I purchased from Circuit City three years ago...it was a display model.

It records 1080i using firewire from a Moto dvr...no problems from any channel. Never sent to JVC for updating. No idea if the unit was fixed when it was shipped. I believe it is an early unit.
