View Full Version : PS3 1080p on Panasonic Plasma 50phd7uy problem
dusty144 12-30-06, 02:15 PM This may have been discussed before but my searches did not pick up anything.
Basically I'm not able to get a 1080p image on my TV. I'm pretty sure it supports 1080p.
Yes I do have the HDMI card installed and have a HDMI cable. The PS3 says it recognizes 1080i & 720p and output visible images but not 1080p. What gives?
I'm not even sure if it is a player or display problem. I just updated the ps3 to firmware 1.32.
Any help much appreciated.
Your Panasonic plasma is a 1,366x768 display panel. It does not support 1080p. It can only display half of the 1080p signal -- the rest of the detail gets thrown out.
For your display, the PS3 should output 1080i, which your panel will downconvert to 768p.
Even half a 1080p signal will still look far better than DVD.
dusty144 12-30-06, 02:27 PM Thanx for the quick reply.
Yes the panel is not full 1080p.
But it accepts a 1080p signal and internally down converts. Thats what I want. Am I missing something.
FooChan 12-30-06, 02:46 PM Maybe it only accepts 1080p @ 24fps. Your PS3 is outputting at 60fps. Could be?
afaik the panny hdmi card does NOT accept 1080p.
dusty144 12-30-06, 07:12 PM Duh!
Wojtek's right.
How stupid is this. HDMI w/o 1080p.
Aaargh
flyingvee 12-30-06, 08:19 PM sheesh - I must be way lucky. My cheapo Vizio accepts and displays 1080p - which is lucky for me - I can switch cable from my fpj to the panel, and still see the display well enough to change to a friendlier res.

All is not lost.
The DVI-D blade for Panny 6, 7, 8 series accepts 1080p at 60 Hz only, according to another AVS poster. You'll need a cheap HDMI-to-DVI adapter, though.
It's worth a try.

I think because the 50phd7uy is 2 years old and I don't remember plasma's displaying 1080p at that time. Maybe some really high end but none that I remember.

Yup I have the same Panny and the Oppo-981 which has 1080p upconvert. I can verify it won't display 1080P on the HDMI.
I know of someone in this forum that verified the DVI-D blade will accept the 1080p. Btw the same DVI-D card works on the 9 series as well.

I am not aware of any Vizio which displays in 1080p. Can you give me the model number?

don't aargh the hdmi.........if you think you need 1080p then buy a 1080p display, feed it a hd source (not upscaled from an oppo or other faux hd) and sit close enough to see the resolution.
your plasma is not 1080P display, so therefore you do not need to input a 1080p source as 1080i input will give you the same good picture but displayed in 720p/768p/1080i but not 1080p.
dont worry it should look great on your panny plasma.
