I have an FPD2185W LCD monitor. Its a secondary TV and a Primary monitor. HDTV on it is good but not great. I was thinking of getting this (TX-R3079WH) to replace the FPD2185W.

The HD CRT has HDTV and an HDMI input while the FPD2185W doesnt (component and DVI however are available with the FPD2185W). Also since its a CRT the quality will be superior by how much so? While I am aware of the deep blacks and white on Tube (CRT) TVs, the brightness can be lacking at times. While LCDs dont need to be adjusted much for REAL brightness. Although the lacking in contrast really makes a picture while Clear, still DULL. Now has anyone used the TX-R3079WH model and if so, how does it look in HD? Also if anyone has used it on the PC, can you elaborate on what plugs you have used and which gave you the best quality. Now I am not limited to just this HD CRT so if anyone can offer a suggestion on other similar size HD CRTs I am open to listen. Im not looking to spend less than $700 so let me know. Thanks! I hope this isnt more than the usal times I ask for help.

Might want to repost this in the proper thread:

The current model of that TV is the ...82. If you have no issues with geometry it would be a good choice for a TV.

thanks for the update. It seems the signal for the HDTV 3082 is interlaced. Isnt that a bad thing? Also would this be the best HDTV out there for less than $700? My budget has went down since im going to be giving my lcd away instead of selling it. Thanks again!

I don't know man. I had the Sammy SlimFit before I took it back and got the Sony XBR970 instead. The PQ was nice but the messed up geometry was too bad for me to accept.

by geometry you mean the picture being out of shape? What exactly is wrong withthe geometry and also im not limited o just that specific hd crt. Im open to anyone out there as long as its less than $700.

If you get real lucky you might be able to snag the 34XBR970 for around that price. That's about the best new CRT you can get these days.

problem is my budget went from 1000 to 700 and I now cant even afford the lower priced 970. Ebay doesnt have any960 or 970s so I will have to go to the third or 4th best HD CRT out there. Unless those also cost more than 700 used :( . Gettings a used TV is not out of the question or buying one on ebay for that matter. Just as long as it doesnt have any geo issues and the picture quality in SD signals and HD signal are better than this fd2185 crap I have! Now one more thing, will this hd crt im going to buy be capable of being used as a Pc monitor? If so does anyone currently have a setup like that? How the quality on a pc compared to a crt pc monitor? I ask too many questions I know!

I had samsung TX 3082WH, which I returned for XBR970, and I definitely feel that I made the right decision. I didn't have big geometry issues with sammy. I had weird dots going vertically about 2 inches from right and left sides of the screen. The PQ on samsung was pretty good, but I definitely like my XBR 970's picture better. In addition, going from 30inches to 34 inches, definitely, made a big difference especially for HD.

XBR 970 also comes with 2 year manufactor warranty, so you probably don't have to worry about getting any in store warranty. Samsung slimfits come with 2 year tube warranty and one year on everything else as I remember.

I have the Samsung TX-R3079 and i wouldn't recommend it... The PQ is great but the geometry problems are over the top. If you like straight lines, stay away from the samsung slimfits.

I would recommend this Westinghouse TV (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7679951&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat95100050015&id=1134703181662) if you're willing to go with LCD. I have heard good things about this TV and its in your price range i think.

sounds like a niceLCD but Im looking for best PQ here. This TV im going to buy is not only going to replace my pc monitor but my TV as well. it will be both. Also that Westy LCD isnt much different in PQ aside from the higher brightness and larger screen size. I not only want a bigger screen but a better PQ. Im ok with bulk which is why CRT is what I chose. Also the CRT would have to be HD so I can use my HD DVR on it. If I didnt have this LCD though I would prolly get that westy though!

funny thing, I decided on that after continuing doing more research. I found the page dedicated to it and have seen really good things about it. Mor eposts like your are reasons for why im going to buy it. Hopefully its a great set and i love it. However how will it perform as a computer monitor? If its not good then i might go out and buy acomputer crt monitor with the change I have left but I need ot know how the LG does first. Hopefully people here have tried it and can elaborate on it. Darn gateway. Im sick and tired of sending a lot of money on stuff I dont like ala fpd2185w. While its a good LCD and one of the best in its class, compared to CRTs its pathetic. For petes sake I have an old refurb sony monitor that has better color representations than this. To believe I got dooped on the 1000:1 contrast ratio. Yea its high, FOR AN LCD. The text is pretty good though  Sorry but im use to spending money on crap and it sickens me.

I have both the FPD2185W (primarily a computer monitor, but also a third TV set) and the Samsung TX-R3079WH (Television in bedroom). The PQ of the Samsung is excellent, I have the brightness turned down to less than 40% (it can be quite bright if you want it to be). I love watching HD television on this set because the color is awsome (better than my Hitachi 42HDS69 and WAY better than the FPD2185W). However, I can't recommend the Samsung because of the geometry issues I experience when viewing SD television. The right side bows out a little. I have a cousin who has a newer 3079WH (he has an additional option in the Service Menu that corrects this issue), and he doesn't have this geometry issue. Maybe Samsung corrected it already. I haven't tried using the Samsung as a computer monitor, so I can't comment on it.

I've learned to live with the Samsung's Geometry flaws, as it was the only HD Television I could afford (when I bought it) that would fit in my cabinet. If I had to make the same choice today, I might still buy the Samsung slim-fit's, as I am still not sold on the PQ of LCD's yet. But if real estate was not an issue, I would not select the Samsung becuase of the Geometry issue.

yea thats one thing that may swayme away from actually purchasing the LG is if it isnt capable of connecting to pc via hdmi/DVI withpretty clear picture quality etc... As with pluging a PC into anSDTV its blurry and old looking while on a pc monitor its crystal clear and such! Thats what im searching for online but cant find much of anything so im hoping someone here can help!

the Sammy is excellent in HD......... the worst part about it is SD viewing..... you'll notice the geometry issues more on SD...... I haven't attempted adjusting it yet though... I need to ask around and see what I can do to try and alleviate it a bit...... I do notice though that SD looks better through the coaxial cable than it does any other way...... which is very weird.... if you use your TV input for SD it looks better for some reason..... lol maybe it's optimized or something i have no idea.....

We have the LG at our bestbuy......I just went with the Sammy on the name.... I like Samsung's products.......and this one isn't that bad if you watch HD programming mostly...... all my favorite shows are major network HD shows.... and I watch HD sports..... so I don't really get too annoyed with it.....

I've had it for about 2 weeks I'd say..... and i'm happy with it........hopefully that doesnt' change lol......

my viewing in HD will be on SNY (I think I have that channel in HD but havent checked) for NY Mets games (road games tend not to show in HD so SD performance will be important for me), cbs, nbc, abc, fox, my 9 (if my 9 is in HD), CW, espn HD and maybe a few other HD channels but those few others will be rarely watched.

As for SD viewing it will be ESPNEWS, ESPN 2, NFL Network (not sure if I have it in HD once the finalizations of the agreement with cablevision go through. For those who dont know that cablevision signed on with NFL network on the 26th of dec 06) andsome other SDviewing via Sports. So as you see the quality will have to be good in SD with very minimal GEO issues! Many sports and news stations have tickers and I read those more than listening to the blah blah blah of the news casters :p

Oh yea and the obvious use on my computer for just about everything on it from email andbrowsing the web to ultimate gaming since PCs are better for gaming from what I heard. The graphics on the pc would beat out the graphics on any xbox 360/ps3 models out there.

superb............ also, whilst prices of lcd plasmas will drop, their quality may never ever match that of CRT........

CRT technology is unbeatable for viewing moving images............yes its bulky, but most tvs are placed in the corner of the room anyway...........

if I owned a plasma or lcd tv, I would never turn it on..............horrible horrible things, that the public seem to have fallen in love with................
