I'm not precisely sure if this forum is correct for this question, but here goes: About a month ago I installed an Onkyo SR804 AV receiver. I purchased it mainly for DVD and HDTV, but it had a phono input, so I hooked up my turntable I hadn't used in years. Awesome sound. Took me back 25 years. I was so inspired that I bought an Onkyo cassette deck to listen to my 15-20 year old cassettes. Here's the problem--with cassettes, sound comes out of all 7 speakers and the sub-woofer only when the sound format on the receiver is set to "mono". In virtually every other setting (THX, Dolby D, DTS) I don't get sound from the L speakers (L, L surround, L back). On those settings, the sound is produced from the other speakers, and actually sounds a lot better, but nothing from the L speakers. What gives?

Make sure you connected the L/R from the deck to the same L/R input pair on the receiver. And I assume the deck is set to output stereo. Last thing, check for bad cable. Cheapo molded plug ends are likely suspects.

Larry: Thank you very much for the suggestion. I was using a fairly expensive audio cable from a local radio store. No way that thing would be bad, right? Wrong! I replaced it with a cheapo molded plug, and now everything is working correctly. As my teenagers would say: "Idiot." Thanks again. JCH
