View Full Version : DVDO vs. Key Digital vs. Lumagen
thebard 12-31-06, 12:08 PM Hi,
I don't want to start any fanatic wars here, but I could use some objective feedback & help on a purchase decision:
I need a switcher that will take two component inputs, one DVI/HDMI, and a composite for legacy gear, with output to DVI/HDMI or component. It needs discrete remote switching. Scaling is not a priority, though I'll need aspect ratio control on the composite input.
I'm considering the following units:
DVDO iscan HD/HD+
Key Digital isync pro
Lumagen visionDVI
So, if price were not a consideration, what are your recommendations? For those with experience with these units, what did you like/dislike? Are there others I haven't considered that might meet my needs?
Thanks.

Well since HD/HD+ and visionDVI are more like legacy gear, price is a big deal. I don't know about isync pro though, so if it was just between DVDO and Lumagen, today I would've gone with the Lumagen since it has gama corrections. I went with a DVDO because of the price though, and gama isn't everything even though it is really nice to have. (if I'd been a bit more patience I could of course have gotten a vision for pretty much the same price as the DVDO HD and HD+ upgrade.)
The HD+ does ok even on poor video/svideo from analog TV, it's far from wowish, but ok.
TomHuffman 12-31-06, 10:27 PM Will you b e using High Definition inputs? If so, the iScan HD+ does not transcode HD signals nor does it do a very good job deinterlacing them. To get both features, you need the VP50.

1080i on the hdmi & one of the components.
I'm leaning toward the isync. One thing I like about it is the additional inputs (including analog audio options, though this is not a major factor in my decision).
But, yes, I'd have to fork over a bit more $$$...
Dean Roddey 12-31-06, 11:04 PM From an automation standpoint, if that's a concern, DVDO is far ahead of the other two.

You mean, as far as ease of use? Capabilities?
A key consideration will be the ability to discretely switch inputs w/ automatic setting (aspect ratio, etc.) changes applied to the sources. One reason for purchase is to pare down my tv inputs to just HDMI/DVI.
I would vote for the Lumagen out of those three but that's just me...

Meaning that the DVDO boxes have extensive, efficient, formally defined two way protocols. The Lumagens are very simplistic and one way. The Key Digitals are very innefficient and not formally defined (read easy to break with new firmware versions.)

it's just you...
