I have a small hot-air popcorn popper that I use for my HT. Right now I have white popcorn, and it seems really rubbery. Is yellow popcorn better? I'd really like to hear from someone who uses a hot-air popper and knows how to get good popcorn. If I'm going to be stuffing myself with it during a movie, it want it to be some good stuff :)

And yes, I'm serious... I want advice for making popcorn. It's an essential part of having a comfortable HT.

The microwave popcorn is pretty dam good, different flavors too. I did try making it like we used to back in the 60's (kettle on the stove and mixed it with butter and salt in a paper grocery bag), but I must have been using the wrong corn as it was kinda tough. There are some great internet sites out there that will help you though.

"microwave popcorn is pretty dam good"

Cook your microwave popcorn for 30 seconds, then wait 30 seconds, then
cook until the popping slows,, it's much fluffier this way.

Air poppers are evil! If you don't eat some grease from time to time you will lose
your immunity to it!

btw, how long can you keep Popcorn?

I bought Orvil's Extreme butter about 6 years ago and noticed, that there's
no expiration date . still got a few bags

or is it 100% produced off petrochemical materials and will never expire ?

I use the Redenbacher microwave stuff, buttery flavor or not, then add margarine also nuked and then the cheddar cheese flavor.

Can't move very quickly any more, that hardening of the arteries is kicking in..;)

I tried a bunch of different kinds with different hot air poppers and didn't like any of them.

The best I've found is Jollytime Crispy n White Light microwave and add your own REAL butter to it.

Mmmmmm

Microwave popcorn is disgusting. I eat it sometimes but only because I'm too lazy to make it on the stove.

Microwave Popcorn isn't that bad; Personally I always use the stove, but thats just because I'm to cheap to buy the fancy microwave stuff. :D

But, Raster, which is older, your projector or that bag of popcorn?

My projector is probably even older, but I do use a good HTPC and iScan to feed it. I'm really looking forward to my first EM focus machine someday, but until then, I gotta milk the old BG800.

Throw out the air popper. Buy a whirley pop and the "fun pop" 4 oz packets of mega pop.

Enjoy better tasting popcorn that you every thought you could have at home for this price!

By "white" popcorn, do you mean the kernels themselves, or the resulting popped popcorn? I've never seen popcorn that's any color but white when popped. It's the oil used to pop it that turns it yellow. I'll second Dave's recommendation - get the Fun Pop or MegaPop prepacks. It's the same ingredients that the theaters use - coconut oil and flavacol seasoning.

FYI, the Theater Accessories forum has tons of popcorn-related threads. Look up Brickie over there. He's the unofficial AVS popcorn guru.

I too use a hot air popper primarily because I find that it pops just as fast as the microwave and gives me the option of using whatever topping I want.

I think yellow IS fluffier than white. It is what I use. As for a topping I like " I can't believe it's not Butter" It comes in a pump spray bottle, has 0 calories and no trans fats. It also tastes great. I also sprinkle bakers yeast or powdered garlic on the popcorn every now and than for a change of pace. I would not suggest the garlic on a first or second date. :D :D

In answer to yellow or white, it makes no difference except for color.

Next to using my 12oz Gold Medal Commercial Popcorn maker, I found that using a wok on my stove made the most authentic theater style popcorn. The wok allowed unpopped kernels to fall back down to the hotspot and stay in the hot oil better as well as to hold a more uniform heat. I found that too high a heat setting (too fast a pop) made the popcorn chewy, as did of course, any humidity introduced after popping. Rebake popcorn on a cookie sheet with the oven door ajar to release humidity to restore it to a reasonably good state. Older popcorn that has not been held in controlled humidity conditions does not pop as well either. Thats probably why a lot of people prefer Megapop in its air proof pouch in addition to the fact that it is usually coconut oil in the Megapop, although you CAN get it with other fats.

Theatres used to all use coconut oil for its indisputably superior taste but many don't now since the public has become aware of problems with various fats. I use Megapop and Flavorcol now and have great results with it and it costs me about $.75 per 12oz batch. Plain bagged popcorn is pretty darn good though as long as the stock turns over in your store. GFS and others stock the 5# bags and the Flavacol as well as the Megapop and turn it over pretty well. Also you can find a Gold Medal dealer in most major cities for Megapop as well.
