How do I Enable CoreAVC H.264 Codec in Media Player Classic?

I have some H.264 encoded HD TS videos. I can play them with PowerDVD7, but I only have the trial version and I am looking for an alternative. In one of the threads here somebody mentioned using the CoreAVC codec with MPC. I can't get it to work.

I installed the codec and restarted the computer, and then I was able to go into MPC options, and add CoreAVC under "external decoders," but I still get an error when I try to play an H.264 video with MPC. Is there something I'm doing wrong or a step I am leaving out?

Right click, options, external filters, add. Add CoreAVC, then click the Prefer button. Then click ok. Load an h264 movie; and right click, filters. You should see CoreAVC there.

Thanks Darkjedi, but it still doesn't work. I keep getting error messages saying that MPC cannot play the file and that I may need to download a codec.

Oh well, I guess I am stuck needing to buy PowerDVD. At least I know it works.

Make sure that's the right codec you need and you don't have other codecs conflicting with it.

Right click in the movie while playing and check the properties box and see what the codec is. If it is indeed h.264 then it should work. Uninstall the trial version of PowerDVD as that could be the problem.

works great !I hesitate to say "it's great". CoreAVC is a much, much better decoder, and he said he already installed it.

It may be a splitter problem.

Pantalaimon,

Don't forget a .ts splitter - like Haali's...

Disable MPEG ps, ts, pva source filters, if they're set on in MPC.

Finally, depending on your VGA and the source file, there are some hardware acceleration tweaks (disabling or using hardware instead of software) you can try from the CoreAVC filter options.

What CPU and VGA do you currently run? Also, which version of CoreAVC codec are you using?

Finally, do you know the bitrate of the h264 file you are trying to playback? There is a chance it may be too high for your CPU or VGA to handle...

Can anyone tell me if the CoreAVC codec will hardware accelerate apple 1080p videos?

EDIT: I just went to their website and found out for myself there is no hardware acceleration at this time (according to their forums).

Right click in the movie while playing and check the properties box and see what the codec is.

It never gets that far. Instead of playing the movie it gives the error message saying it can't play the vid and I need a codec. Then it crashes.

If it is indeed h.264 then it should work. Uninstall the trial version of PowerDVD as that could be the problem.

PowerDVD is not on the same computer that I am testing MPC on. I was afraid of conflicts between codecs and didn't want to do it all on the same machine. So that is not the problem.

try this: download latest mpc build from here

http://ffdshow.faireal.net/

go to mpc's option dialog, add coreavc codec to external filters. disable all other ext. filters for now to prevent conflict.

works for me.

I use VLC for non-H.264 TS videos, and I agree, it works great. Unfortunately it chokes on H.264.

Ahh! OK, that must be the problem. How do I use the splitter? I don't have clue about it.

Google Haali Media Splitter, and install it.

I have the same question as the OP. I have MPC configured to use ffdshow for DVDs and DVD rips, so my external filters list currently has NVIDIA Video Decoder and ffdshow Audio Decoder in it. If I add the CoreAVC H.264 decoder, will ffdshow still run normally for the non H.264 content? Will I need to play around with its codecs at all?

The CoreAVC installer has the splitter you need.

I had the same problem. CoreAVC was installed, splitter was installed, but still wouldnt play. It turned out to be that in the CoreAVC settings all video types under "Accept inputs" were unticked, so obviously it was rejecting any H264 stuff thrown at it.

I accessed the settings for it via Graphedit..
