I don't want to start a war...

I have a VP50 in my HT setup now that I have on demo and must make a decision. I'm going into it with the following:

Sony ES9000 DVD @480i via component vid
Expressview (DISH) 9200 @ 1080I via HDMI
Toshiba HD-A2 @1080I via HDMI

and into a Panasonic PT-AX100U via HDMI (720p-60 output)

I don't have a ton of experience with projectors and none with VP units before the DVDO... To be honest, I'm having a lot of trouble finding a compelling reason to keep the VP50! If I watch the ABT Demo DVD, I can see many things on weird frame cadences. I guess my concern is when am I going to see these? When the 3:2 pulldown (film) kicks in on the Sony, everything looks great on the demo material (on the 2,3,2,3 sample) and all of the DVDs that I've pulled from my collection.

Can I get some opinions and/or some viewing material recommendations that will help to demonstrate the real world benefits of this box? I'm sure I must be missing something.

I think that SD-DVD will be my primary source for now but shifting to HD-DVD. I do plan to watch some HD satellite too but that will likely be secondary if my past viewing habits hold.

Help please!!! I've even call ABT directly and didn't get a very good sales pitch for my trouble...

kartman,

I have been looking at the VP30 and the VP50 from DVDO as well. The way I see it is the VP50 offers what more sophisticated processing of what you call "weird cadences". It also offers de-interlacing of 1080i input sources and has some gamma adjustment capabilities that the VP30 does not have. For me, since I do not own a 1080p projector at this time, the VP30 with the ABT102 add-on card would probably be sufficient. If I was considering getting a 1080p pj in the near future I would probably get the VP50 to take full advantage as the VP30 cannot properly de-interlace 1080i input.

sdlehman,

So even with your non 1080p projector, you don't plan to watch HD films and videos ?

1080i deinterlacing has nothing to do with the projector definition, it has to do with the source definition.

I'm planning to buy a processor and I'm only looking on those deinterlacing 1080i, even if I own a 720p projector.

The processor will have to deinterlace properly 1080i to 1080p and downscale it properly to 720p.

Richard.

I just think the VP50 is overkill for my AE700. The VP30 will scale the 1080i signal from my HD A1 to 720p for me. I'm more interested in the processor improving SD signals.
