View Full Version : Is DLP/iLA/LCoS *THE* superior technology if you're not concerned with chassis depth?

Just wondering, all I care about is image quality and i've owned several LCD sets which i've hated, I mean they're "cool" cause they're light and can hang on walls and it impresses most people that don't know anything about technology, but i'm wondering if depth and "cool factor" isn't a concern, should I be returning my current LCD and going with something RPTV?

I view in an apartment with a fairly dark room at all times, have xbox 360 over vga for hddvd/upconverted dvd's & games, comcast 6412 dvr over hdmi for tv and I just don't want to be disappointed again.

suggestions please

I'd go DLP for the bang for the buck.

JVC makes a nice TV too.

Sony TVs are nice if you can find an SXRD without green blob.

Yes, I like all 3 techs better than LCD or plasma.

If you don't care about chasis depth - and only care about image quality - then CRT tube is the way to go. Of course, you would be limited to a 34 inch set....

Yes, those are 3 great displays. One is not better than another -- you need to go see for yourself which you prefer.

I own a 1080P thoshiba DLP. I love it, it looks great on HD, and even 480p with the Xbox.

It doesn't accept a 1080p signal and the version that I have doesn't have PC input, but that's pretty much it's only downfall.

well other than mounting/space saving, is there ANY reason to buy a lcd/plasma?

I need a 1080p capable set with vga input that works @ full resolution from xbox360 w/ hd-dvd... primarily used for tv/movies, but games sometimes

also, having a halfway descent SD picture wouldn't be bad either, i'm sitting about 5ft from my viewing location so what set/size what you guys recommend i go check out?

My buddy is really happy with his Mitsubishi 57" DLP he just got but i think it's too big for my room.

thanks

The new JVC Slim D-ILA sets (first one shipping in a few weeks) shrink chassis depth by a factor of two and can be wall mounted. The deficit to plasmas is then only ~6".

I can't wait to read some reviews on this new "998 Series" JVC. If they have done their homework this display should be the new benchmark. But, lookout for the newest 60" 720p plasma to make some serious noise with an MSRP of under $2500. Could be a very interesting year.

It doesn't bother me that they're deeper, I'm putting it on a table anyway... won't these be REDICULOUS expensive?

PQ suffered with "slim-line" CRTs. I would be wary of the new slim JVC until reviews are out.

what's a good choice for someone as anal as me and a 7ft viewing distance, viewed from a couch dead center?

From the JVC press room on their website:

"The JVC HD-58S998 will be available in January and will sell for about $3,299.95. The JVC HD-65S998 will be available in March and will sell for about $4,199.95."

Bet they're around 2 and 3k a year from now. I think the 58 might just fit into my TV corner, judging by the image. Interesting.

at 5-7ft less than 50" would be best.
