I'm hoping someone here has a good idea as to what can be done with this room. Its a good sized room, but its probably about one of the worst possible as far as audio is concerned. [it was like this when I moved in] The lack of any sort of carpet etc tends to make the low end seem very muddy I think. The narrow width of the area where the TV is also makes the sound stage waaay to narrow. Actualy, the narrow sound stage is the main thing I want to fix. I'm willing to move just about everything in the room, so if you have an idea, tell me. ;)

I'd just start by attacking it with absorption. Fiberglass panels on many of those wall surfaces, some thick area rugs can help, etc. Doing this won't cost you whole lot and will make a profound difference. I can tell that the room is probably an echoey fatiguing mess as it stands now.

Putting in carpet is not going to help at all with muddy bass. For that you would need to put bass traps in as many corners as you can in that room. I would start with the front corners and go from there. Also you would need to put some thinner panels on the first reflections and a few thicker panels on the back wall.

As Glenn explained, you need bass traps to improve the low frequencies. But for improved imaging and sound stage, the solution is absorption at the first reflection points on the side walls and ceiling (and floor). Both bass traps and first reflection treatment are fundamental to improving the acoustics in every room.
