Hi, I am just starting looking in to building a ht system. I was just going to buy a onkyo htib but I heard that the sound was not that great. I am very good in woodworking and have quite a few tools myself and have access to a 22" planer and table saws.

I was wondering why everyone builds these speakers out of 3/4 mdf and then veneers them. I would like to know if it is possible to build a set out of cherry or red oak or something like that. I have access to cherry and oak ruff cut so price is not a big deal.

Thanks for any input,
Rob

hardwoods tend to color the sound and can warp over time. MDF will never warp and as long as it is braced and thick enough, wont color the sound. I have seen some guitar amps made out of real maple but never a speaker.
