Hey there,

I have an older Sears Lxi 52" RPTV and the problem I am having is that everyone in any movie looks glowy. Anytime there is a light in a movie it is bright white. What would cause this? I have adjusted the picture and brightness settings and they really don't seem to help. I can't seem to find a contrast setting. Any idea's guys? Also the CRT cooling fluid in the blue and green guns looks very dirty and contaminated. Could this be causing the problems I am having? I know the tv is worthless but I would like to do some work on it (for my own personal enjoyment) and I appreciate any ideas/advice. Thank you in advance.

Jordan,
Very likely there is not much you can do - the guns do wear out over time (could be down to half brightness in 5 years) and short of replacing them there's not much to be done.
If you could get the contrast down to a meaningful level, the picture would probably be too dark to see.
Short of cleaning the light path, you're pretty much sol...

Is the coolant that I see down inside of the guns in the light path? They sure are dirty.

Hey, I used to have a V-tach Honduh. Maybe my tv needs v-tach and a turrbo.

I saw your other post. You got a throw away man. Replacing the screen could be $300. Changing the contaminated fluid in the crt's maybe $300-%500. Figure even if you do those things to it, the crt's probably have bleeding and may have burn in. Or something else could die on that old of a set within 6 months. Bottom line- it aint worth your time or money. Even with a new screen and new crt fluid, I guarantee the picture aint gonna look good, let alone be HD capable.

Sears still has the service manual. Ordered it earlier....around $100.00 shipped. Also found a used replacement screen locally for $50.00. I described how nasty the crt fluid looked to a buddy of mine who is a tv repairman....he siad it is definately the cause of the glowy picture. He siad that what I am seeing on the screen is the image trying to shine through that nastiest looking algie ridden piss you could ever imagine. Siad it will look like a new tv when I am done, that it is a very common problem on old magnovox's. Got 3 bottles of the Fluid from him for $10.00 each. He gave me RCA fluid and siad that it is a much better product than the magnavox stuff. I am not looking for HD quality here, anything better than the $69.00 20" tv I am using now will suffice. And if I take it all apart and break somthing....oh well I have $200.00 in it at most and learned alot in the process of trying to fix it. I would be happy with 6 month out of it if I can get the picture somewhat decent. The fun part now is going to be making sure that the guns are not leaking when I put them back together and trying to figure out the convergence. I am hoping the service manual explains it well enough that even I can understand. :D :D Besides, where am I going to find a woodgrain finish 52" tv now a days? :p

Good luck, if you got the time... Let us know if you are even able to dial in the grayscale or halfway set up the convergence.

How did it turn out? I have a 55" Philips RPTV CRT that had bad fluid according to the repair guy. The fluid was replaced under my extended warranty. I don't get the TV back until this Saturday though.
