I have searched google for this specific problem but Im not finding my situation. For the last 2 weeks my HL-S5086W is turning off by itself at completely random times. Sometimes it will stay on for hours, sometimes it will shut off after 5 minutes. I can turn it back on right away but this is getting rather annoying. Im not noticing any problems with the picture or sound. Is anyone else having this problem and have you found a possible solution?

I am having the exact some problem. Have you discovered what is happening?

I found this on Highdefforum a week or so ago. Hope it helps.

"This is a common problem. In many (not all) cases it's the mechanical location of the switch behind the lamp door. By design, if the lamp door is not completely secured, the switch will not be depressed and therefore the TV will not start up for safety reasons. What's happening in some of the random shut-down events is the switch is bent a little bit, but just enough to prevent consistent contact even with the lamp door adequately secured. The fix is to turn off the TV, bend the switch out a little so it will make good contact when the door is closed, replace the door, then turn on the set.

The above fix has resulted in complete resolution for many people with this problem.

Even replacing the light engine doesn't resolve this problem because the switch is actually mounted to the frame of the TV. I've spoken with a few people who had practically the entire guts of the TV replaced, to no avail. When they tried this, everything was resolved. It's harmless and certainly worth a shot."

does anyone know where the second fan is in these TV's? I tried the lamp door fix and it seems to be working, however I wanted to clean out all the dust back there. thanks

Had the same random shut off issue for the past few days. Hasn't been hot or anything, nor has the TV shown any overtemp or fan problem indications via the LEDs on front.

In fact, if I start up the TV holding down the fan door switch then release the switch, the shutdown behavior matches the random behavior I've been experiencing, so I think this may be the trick. What I did was fold up a narrow strip of tape and stick it under the plastic tab on the fan door that pushes down on the switch. This extra tape ensures that the switch stays down fully and not just barely enough to work "most of the time". I suppose you could just jumper the blue and white wires or tape down the switch to be certain.

I ended up cleaning the easy-to-see fan that cools the DMD chip heatsink (left of lamp in the light engine block). Also pulled the light engine (easy) and cleaned the large fan way in the back that cools the lamp. That one had heavy soot on each blade, front and back, and the fan was starting to get a little noisy due to being out of balance.

Here's a great site that shows the how-to to get to the fans. It helped me a lot. Make sure to click the "Read the Entire Conversation" link to get to the pics and instruction.

Since servicing/cleaning the TV (3yrs old), I haven't had any random shut-offs.
