View Full Version : Another Viewing Distance Thread
RudyMeister 01-01-07, 08:03 PM I currently have the 57" Mits DLP (732 model) and have a chance to trade it in for the 65" Mits (the next size up).
My viewing distance is around 10 to 11 feet.
When viewing movies with black bars on top, I wish it was a bit bigger...but affraid that65" may be too big at this distance.
What ya think?
kgoetz97 01-01-07, 08:35 PM My opinion...not too big. Go for it...

I agree. Just got a Mits 65" dlp and can't wait to get it delivered. My seating is just under 15 feet away. Go for the big one!

If your bigger set is 1080p, you should have a good viewing experience on HD or good DVD. On SD, particularly older reruns, you may find the graininess annoying. But I doubt it will be a big deal. Hope you enjoy your new set if you buy it.
RudyMeister 01-01-07, 10:13 PM When I first looked into buying a RP a whle back, I was looking at 50". Now that I have a 57", for HD I feel that it's OK or can be a bit bigger. But 65", I'm just not sure.
I like to watch HD programs. I have an HD DVD player and really enjoy the HD DVD movies.
The back of my sectional, most optimal position, to the screen is actually 12 ft BUT...from the front it's at 10.5 ft.n to the screen. The shortest viewing distance is between 8 and 9 ft.

At 14 or 15' I would go for the 65" too myself,
But I'm at 11 - 12 ft.

Bigger than that for HD programming. The number is 1.5 X the Diag. size of the TV for HD programming. I sit at 13' my wife normally at about 11' and I am looking at 70"+ sets. The Sony and Toshiba seem to have the best SD pic which you REALLY need unless you are much further back. For me at 13' I need the best SD pic on a 70" screen I can get.
BTW, the SD standard is as much as 2.5 X the diag. I am WAY under that, hence the need for a good SD pic...I still watch more than 50% SD programming, but do prefer HD whenever possible!
f300v10 01-02-07, 12:32 PM I have a 62" Toshiba DLP and just watched MI:III from around 8 ft. It looked fabulous. 65" at 11 ft. will be no problem. In fact to get the often recommended 30 deg. viewing angle you would need to be around 9 ft. with a 65" set.

Is that a 720P or a 1080P set?

It's the 62MX196 1080P.

Thanks for the reply.
I've been trying to get some idea if a 56" 720P set is too big at 8-9 feet. There seems to be a huge amount of contradictory info out there on viewing distances.

Well if that's the case 12ft is 144".... which is far short of 612.5" for SD
But I watch SD in 4:3 non-stretch format...would it matter?

HUH?! Not sure what your post is trying to point out here...
If you have a 70" screen (like a Sony or something) and you are watching a lot of SD programming the rule of thumb of 2.5X the screen size puts you a bit over 14.5' from the screen for OPTIMAL viewing.
If you are watching mostly HD content then the 1.5X distance on that same 70" screen would put you at an optimal distance of 8.75' from the screen.
You must have been using some strange new math I am not familiar with...and that is wrong.
I think if you are watching SD in 4:3 non stretch then you would need to measure the actual diagonal of the picture you are viewing, not the stuff in the gray bars on either side. Then redo the math... That number in inches TIMES 2.5 and then sit that distance (in inches) from the TV or divide that number by 12 and get the distance in FEET you should sit from the screen.
RudyMeister 01-04-07, 01:39 AM that's 162.5" for SD ... 2.5 X 65"
So...I would need to figure out the screen size of a 4:3 on the 65" which I do not have yet.
RudyMeister 01-04-07, 01:40 AM There are so many rules out there...some say multiply by the diag screen sze some says 2.5 to 3.2 times the screen height... sigh
I own the 65732 and I can tell you from 15' I wish I had bigger.
from maybe 9-10 feet the picture on HDTV and HD-DVD is stunning.
I think you'll be really happy with the 65" and probably kick yourself if you don't go bigger.
I just moved up to a 61 inch Samsung from a 56. I'm sitting just under 10 ft. and my PQ doesn't look as good to me. Lots of SSE. I know to some this isn't a biggie.
I don't have a Hi Def DVD player and neither set was calbrated but the 56 looked sharper to my 53 year old eyes.
I'm considering going BACK to the 56 if they'll let me. Am I making "another" mistake?

I don't think so. Get/do what you'll be the happiest with. You don't want to keep turning it on and wishing you had the 56 again. It'll drive you crazy if you let it. Especially if there's no way to move your seating back any.

I think it depends on the sets you look at. I was initially looking at the Mitsu 73" set and just not matter what I looked at (other than THE BEST HD signal) the picture just was not good...I looked at several different ones and was never impressed. The 65" Mitsu on the other hand looked GREAT! Go figure. The smaller Sammy's look quite a bit better than the big one.
You do always run into that problem though. You take a "light engine" and use it on a 56" screen, then take it and use it on a 61" and then on a 71" and guess what there is picture degradation each time you up the screen size because you have not changed the light engine!
You used to see this some on the CRT RPTV's too. The smaller screens would use 7" "guns" and the bigger screens to maintain excellent PQ would bump up to 9" guns. I will certainly miss my 53" Elite picture when I move up to the 70" Sony...I just hope I am not TOO disappointed in the SD programming pic!
On the distance from screen note that started all this. I have heard the distance you should be calculating off of is the width of the screen, not the diag....I have only seen that in one places vs. I have seen the diag calculation several times. Really it depends on how good your vision is. If you have 20/15 vision you better have a GREAT PQ because you are going to SEE the difference. If your eyes are like mine 20/30 well, it might not be AS big a deal, but that is still pretty good...get out to 20/60, maybe it is not going to matter so much...
YMMV.
RudyMeister 01-06-07, 10:37 PM OK just an update. Got the Mits 65732 home last night and had it set up on an old stand of 15" high.
Pros: The PQ is simply incredible. Watching the Cowboys vs. seahawks game right now and it's just amazing. Watched HD DVD movies last nitght and I was simply speechless. Remember I moved up from a 57" Mits.
Cons: The sheer size of the set is still a bit overwhelming for me. My room is 14' X 19'
My viewing distance is almost 12' to the nose.
I can tell that I get a little bit of eye fatigue after watching it for about 30 minutes.
I don't know what to do right now. Mits doesn't make one in size 61". I love the PQ of this set ....it's just too big? am I just not used to it? because it does cause some eye strain....
I went to a local CC and saw a 61" set next to the Mits 65" and I thought that the 61" set was less straining on the eyes.
Do I need to give it a few more days of trial. I can't believe what a difference 4" can make in screen size.
Yes,
Wait it out. I watched the game on my OTA and it looked better than my Cable HD.
I moved up from a 56 at 10ft. to a 61. Today I'm not so much in a panic as I was before.
I've got an XA1 not updated yet, so I don't know if the HDMI handshake will now work.
I'll know in the next few days.
RudyMeister 01-07-07, 12:46 AM Well.... 61" from 10ft is not as overwhelming ...so I think you'll be fine.
Believe me...if you have a chance to place the 61" next to a 65"...there's a huge difference in size...I was quite surprised.
