So I put in a dvd movie into my xbox 360 and my Sony 50A10 is only displaying it at 480p. I thought I would expect something like 720p or 1080i.
Anyone know what the problem is? I'm using component to hook it up to my TV and on the back of the xbox 360, it's set to HDTV.

You still have to change the settings in the Xbox 360 dashboard to make it output at 1080.
It's on the purple "settings" page, I just don't recall specifically when sub-menu needs to be adjusted.
I already did that
but when the movie starts, and I press Display on my Sony remote control, it shows up as 480p.
does it make a big difference that I burned VOB files onto a DVD-R?

If your running through component then its gonna be in 480p.The Xbox doesnt upscale DVD's unless you are using the VGA cable.
so I'll have to buy something like this: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000H96ZJE/nextag-vg-20/ref=nosim???
will this be the same case for the HD-DVD player if I decide to get one.
How are you connecting to the TV, if it's over component I don't believe the 360 can upconvert copy protected DVD's over the component cables.
nevermind...someone already pointed that out, I guess that's what I get for opening pages and replying to them at work an hour later....
Check your settings on your TV. I had to change the settings in my TV and on my 360 before it would display. I'm new to HD so I may just have it all wrong. I have the 360 set to 1080i and the TV set to 1080i and the picture looks great, especially playing CoD3, GoW, and F.E.A.R.

The HD-DVD player will allow you to do 720p over Component.
