Hello All,

I've been racking my head on trying to get my Replay 5040 to get an updated guide now for 2 months! It has worked fine for years but now it stopped working. Switched to modem just to get it updated. A few days ago it looks like it upgraded to the new code 144 over the modem. Still does not work. Soo I put a network sniffer (to capture data sent between the DVR and replays servers) and I can see it is able to talk to the servers, I see the actuall conversation between the two in clear text (more on the privacy part later). However at the end of the conversation it seems to be getting an authorization error complaining about bad username/password?? Nowhere on the replay box allows me to enter this nor have I ever had too? Okay tried WiRNS and pointed 5040 to it and still no luck getting guide update on 5040? Wirns can get a guide from ZapToIt but not pass it to 5040?
Notice on my sniffer that even though 5040 is using Wirns, there is still comms between 5040 and Replay servers, same logon auth issue. The sniff shows the conversation with replay seems to be on behalf of WiRNS or something like that.

ALSO
Noticed in the sniffer transcript of the 5040->Replay servers that part of the conversation included a list of MY recorded shows to the replay servers! Why is Replay asking for a list of what I have recorded !!

Anyone here have any thoughts on this? I will be trying Replay support this week but I have heard they are not too helpful.. I also want to know how to turn off the privacy issue with my show lists being sent to them.

I used Ethereal (free) to network snoop and ran it on the public side of my firewall to capture all the packets going in and out.

Thanks all..

The username/password and listing of recorded shows sounds a lot like the myreplaytv.com service. As to why that is now giving an authorization error I couldn't say. Perhaps if you login to the website you can reset your password.

As for the channel guide, why don't you try changing your zip code, then changing it back and reselecting your cable provider (Network and Input settings in Setup). My cable company (time warner) changed their lineup a couple months back and I had to choose the new lineup in order to get guide updates.

I spoke to 2 support personel and looking at my sniffer logs from Ethereal, we were able to extract the error code returned. IT does indicate a problem with the Zip code. So we tried neigboring Zips and zips from other states to no avail. At this point the tech wants me to do a factory reset, which loses my shows and my 160 gig drive is almost full so that's a bummer. I hesitate to do it just yet thinking there may be a way around it. Anyone think of a good util to refresh the system without losing the programs. Also tried going back to the modem and now that's broke! So we have no guide now and a corrupt system??

The techs had no clue as to why I was getting a logon error though and that seems to have disappeared anyway now. I might have gotten confused at what point I saw that. I think it may have been when I was trying WiRNS. I am sure it was a logon problem at replay though but it may not be of any consequence at this point.

What would you Replay pro's do from here??

I'd use DVArchive and pull all the shows off of it. Then, do the factory reset. I'd venture a guess that you may even have to re-image the drive to finally fix the problem.

One reason replay is getting all of your recorded show data is for the myreplaytv.com service. You can log on to the service and it will give you a list of everything on your box, and your box's future recordings/etc. The replay servers would need this info to provide this service.

If that bothers you, you should not be using replay/tivo/etc. Not only do they all know what you watch (though i doubt any humans are staring at, laughing at you), they know what you pause for, what you skip over, and what you repeat (tivo admits it does, and i bet that replay's EULA states they have the permission to as well).
Each year, tivo releases its list of the 10 most replayed moments (janet jackson's wardrobe malfunction being one of the most re-played ever). This data comes from each and every box.
You can rest easy knowing, however, that nobody at replay is probably paying attention. I doubt anyone there has much to do with our discontinued little boxes at all, aside from RMAs and guide data updates.

and as far as your problem, it does sound like you need to re-image. Pull your shows off with dvarchive overnight and reimage the drive. your modem may even come back to life.

Also, why did it look like it was downloading new firmware? This should have happened over a year ago. Was your box sitting unused for some amount of time? This would suggest a lineup change that screwed you up... Or do you own a 5500 and you had old firmware to be able to keep CA?

anyway, good luck!
