To clean up HD and SD DirecTV, I am considering getting the algolith flea or a 2007 Denon AV receiver that includes the Silicon Optix Reon-VX or Realta. The Reon is supposed to provide mosquito+block noise reduction to remove the noise and artifacts caused by this compression. Although the Silicon Optix website does not specifically mention this in the Realta features list, does it also do mosquito and block noise reduction? How would the algolith flea compare to the Reon and Realta for this function? Are there advantages to having this feature in the AV receiver rather than a separate box?

I was not aware that those Denon Receivers accepted and applied video scaling / processing on its video inputs. I thought it was only for DVD playback. I could be completly wrong though, im still trying to learn.

Denon already is selling DVD players with realta. It has also been announced that some of their upcoming models of AV receivers that will become available by mid-2007 will have realta or reon.

Will the Receivers allow one to input any video source and have processing applied to the output?
Thanks.

The noise reduction found in the Flea is far superior to that built in to the Silicon Optix parts.
You should be able to compare quite easily if you have a Silicon Optix test DVD. Look out for for less dynamic noise on the shot of the flower, removal of mosquito on the scenes with the trees and reduced dynamic noise with minimal motion trails on the rollercoaster scene.

Neil, haven't I just seen you in the UK forum? :) Do you know where Algolith products can be bought in UK/Europe? Just did a search a few hours ago and all I came up with was one swiss shop.

Neil is the UK distributor for Algolith products......or at least he is the UK representative of a european distributor. I'm sure if you contact him he'll be able to advise

Heh - that's cool! Does he have a homepage with prices etc? Thanks Gordon! Btw, do you like the Flea as much as Neil does?

When I saw the flea when it was announced over a year ago I thought it appeared to work well. Whether it's economically viable is another question. I am unsure if you are allowed to link to pages. If you go to the other forum you should see links to his avdoctor website I think.

Yep hopping around the world both on forum and in reality!!!
The HQV realta part used some fairly old Algolith IP. Not had a chance to check out the newer parts but I know how far the Algolith performance has come recently and it is well ahead of the HQV. Again I would suggest that a simple test of any noise reduction scheme can be made as I decribed above.
Please visit the Algolith homepage for details of the European distributor. All of my details can be found there.
For the record AV Doctor is also my company but is not involved in the distribution business in any way!
Cheers,
Neil
