My 5040 refuses to start - i.e blue light comes on, but nothing else happens. Have unplugged everything (cables, lan, etc) overnight. If it matters, the TV is connected via cable pass through - no AV cables etc. Same problem.
Various threads indicate that a hang at the "Please Wait" screen means a dead HD. But mine never gets that far, so I am not sure that's the cause.
Any suggestions?
Assuming a HD replacement is required, how does one select the "correct" image for the new HD?
Thanks!

Thanks, but while I hate to be dense, but I can't find anything by or about "grasshopper"
Meaning of grasshopper - http://www.martial-forums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=10692
What image to use: - http://www.replaytvupgrade.com/whichimage.htm
Before you do anything, attach a monitor to the COMPOSITE output (yellow cable port on the ReplayTV outputs) and see what you can see....
Bottom line, go to www.replaytvupgrade.com and if you carefully read through the links you can solve almost any ReplayTV problem.

Fixed It!
Nded provided the key piece of missing information: There has to be an RCA cable connected to the TV. I was just using the cable pass through.
Without the RCA cable there was nothing displayed on the TV to give me a clue as to why the box was hanging. After I installed the RCA cable & could see what was happening, I was able to follow the troubleshooting threads & ultimately put in a new HD.
FYI - I found the RTV output on TV channel 91, but that is probably TV dependent.
Thanks to Nded & everyone else who contributes!
