I just recently moved into a new place and the place is clearly wired with what appears to be Cat5 jacks. The wiring box has Cat5e wiring and a plate marked leviton on it that appears to have normal Cat5 jacks in it. However, I'm not sure what it does, as I can't imagine it being a switch...

The wierd thing is the jacks. They all have 5 wires in it, but is too small to be a normal Cat5e jack. It doesn't fit, but looks just like one. There are two of them and I suspect they are both for phones.

Do anyone have any experience with this? I'm trying to network the home.

If I find my camera in the boxes, I will post some pictures.

take a look at levitons website and see if you can identify them from there.

Cat5 is a cable type. RJ-11 and RJ-45 are examples of connectors/jacks. Need the pics though, as I'm sure I understand what you are saying.

I think it is a pair of RJ-11 jacks with 6 pins in the wall plate. However, one of the cables connected to the plate is a Cat5e.

I wonder if a RJ-11 to RJ-45 adapter would solve my problem. Problem is, the Cat5e cable in the wiring box is not connected to anything. I think the Cat5e cables was supposed to connect to the Leviton plate.

I will post some pictures late tomorrow evening.

I moved into a more recently built house, and the builders had run cat5 to each of the phone jacks. This was great, as I took one of the pairs and kept it for phone, and took two of the pairs and wired them up and run my home network over them. In my "wiring area" in the basement, I have a phone punch down panel and an ethernet switch. Very convenient. Now though I wish that they had run two cat5 to each room.
