I have a limited space for an IB and I thought this driver would be a good choice considering the low Qts, low Vas, and decent Fs. The Xmax isn't as good as the more expensive drivers but considering this driver is less then half the price, it has cought my eye. It looks to be just as good as the IB version with less then half the Vas...

Would this driver x2 be a good fit for my IB?

I also posted this on the CIB site to get some additional responses.

There is no reason to use this driver for an IB (relatively high price, and low Vb). You should either go with multiple lower-cost drivers (PE IB or DVC series, AA Atlas drivers, etc.) or step up to the big league with high-output drivers (AA Arsenal or new Abyss, Fi SSD or Q, TC 2000 or higher, etc.)

The main reason this driver appealed to me was the low Vas. This driver has only 4.6 ft^3 Vas compared to others such as the PE Dayton 15"IB which has an 11.11 ft^3 Vas. I only have 100 ft^3 to work with in my IB cavity and I want to put in 2 of these if I go with 15's.

The Fi 15" Q series driver also has a lower Vas and over 2x the Xmax which is nice for my situation but they cost more then double the price and require more power which in turn will cost more money for the amp as well.

Edit: I also just realized the price went back up... These were on special for $130 for a while.

I think actual performance has more to do with your IB's Vb in relation to a driver's Vd than it has to do with Vas. A low-Vas, high-excursion driver will still be more effected by back pressure from a "small" IB volume than a high-Vas driver with less excursion. I use a pair of Atlas 15's in my 129ft^3 IB space, and can still feel lots of pressure on the door of this closet when they're really going, meaning they can "feel" it to. If I recall, I've a Vb ~5(Vas) with the pair. I'm sure I could find a pair of 15s with much lower Vas, but much higher excursion. In which case, they'd better fit the Vas-based definition of IB, but they'd be less suitable in reality as they'd experience even more back pressure, less suited to the "spirit" of IB, if not the definition.

Basically, I don't worry about Vas so much, and I think, from the two Daytons, that the HF would make a better IB driver than the HO.

That's my thinking on it, anyway, hope it made sense. :)

Thanks for the input Jack. I know you have been around subs a long time and your knowledge is well respected. Since the price went back up on the RS series subs I pretty much ruled them out again.

I have thought seriously about the Dayton DVC though and wondered why people don't use these as much for IB use...

They have a lower Fs, lower Qts, higher Xmax, lower Vas, and a higher sensitivity then the IB15's and are only a few bucks more. Isn't the name of the game in IB installs all about displacement? And the only spec the HF sub has on the DVC is Fs by a couple Hz.

I've definitely seen the DVC used in more than a few IB installs. Its not rare at all.

I agree with Jack. If you are going to pick one of the RS series from Dayton. Go for the HF instead of the HO for an IB installation. Should go lower. They have 2mm more xmax, if that makes anymuch difference....

I'm sure the DVC would work very well. The things that intrigue me about the Dayton HF are the very low inductance and distortion, and I'm thinking about them for the IB.

I installed a pair of Tempests...in a 125 cube cavity....thats under my stairs...I had these drivers for 4 years in twinn 5.5 cube sonos...I thought the sound was awesome until I converted them to an IB configuration....WOW!....

These drivers don'd cost much around 150.00 each...they have 11.9 vas is is pretty high..and a 16.6" Xmax....they love big spaces...

That's exactly what I was looking at earlier when I started the post. I thought the RS drivers would be best due to the low distortion but in an IB does that matter as much?

Too bad... the price went up and the free shipping went away as well. Could have had these for $130 shipped each.

Jack, if you put these in and want to give up your Atlas drivers I would be interested to take them off your hands. ;)

Not sure why it would matter less...

Ahh, well...there's always another sale coming up.

Noted. :)
