My son gave me a nice Christmas present when he threw a ball across the room to his brother and shattered my new Pio 5070. What is the protocol here? I assume repair is completely out of the question. Is it a total loss? Is there typically any interest in, and/or a market for, components? If not, what is the "green" way to dispose? Vexing questions I had wished to never pose.

I'm no expert when it comes to this, but I did spend about a day researching this about a month ago and from what I learned it really is'nt cost effeceint to fix. Your best bet to regain some of your lost would be to part out the salvagble parts. I do remeber thou there is two types of plasma screens one with a protective glass and one without. If your has this protective glass you may not be as bad of shape as you think your in. Good luck.

It wouldn't hurt to check your homeowners insurance policy and your credit card warranty benefits. If no luck, put out a "best offer" ad on craigslist. If no response, offer it free on craigslist.

I am sorry to hear that. I would take a picture and see if you can put it on e-bay to get something back, depending on where you purchased from you can also call Pioneer but it would be tough. Let me know if you need more details ( I would be willing to try to help you out in this situation)

Not sure about your Pioneer, but the Panny's are supposed to have two glass screens. One the outer protective screen and two the inner Plasma Display Panel. From what I've read the outer can be replaced for around $200 -$900. Call Pioneer and see what they say.

PS - Sorry to hear about the damage.

I feel for you..... I did not realize it was actual glass!!! There has to be something you can do.... Maybe call Pio and ask them if it can be fixed??

If you dont mind me asking - what kind of ball was it?

thanks, rp

You aren't the guy that threatened to "have his kid accidentally throw the ball through the screen" just to have his homeowners cover his plasma because it had a couple dead pixels or buzzed, right? Man, I swear I replied to someone who suggested this just before Christmas.

Not him - he only has 4 posts that show up in search (out of the 13 that his post counts says). None of them mention anything of the sort.

No, I know. I was joking with him. Although, I am not lying. I did see a post with a guy threatening to do just that. I can't seem to pull it up now though - maybe it was deleted.

Definitely check w/ your homeowner's insurer and your credit card company if you purchased it with a credit card.

I also recall a credit card commercial years ago where it showed a toddler sticking a piece of bread with jam on it into a VCR and the credit card company indicated that type of damage would be covered even though it technically wasn't accidental damage.

Thanks all. I will check homeowners. I can't come down too hard on my son given how many windows I broke as a kid. My parents were just lucky they had no plamsas in the paths of my destruction!

FYI, there are also accidental damage protection available out there but you have to buy it with you warranty which does make sense.

If you bought it with an American Express or Visa Plat card less than 90 days ago, then you'll be covered under their Purchase Protection Plan.

But I think in American Expresses case it is limited to $1,000 per incident, so while it won't replace it, it wont be a total loss at least.

Check with your card.

I would not file a claim on my homeowners insurance for a damaged/destroyed tv.

They would probably cancel you next year or jack up your rate until you go somewhere else.

I am happy just to have homeowners insurance to cover catastrophic losses.
