My 27" is starting to get flaky, so I may have to get a new TV soon. $ issues preclude a large flat panel, so I figure that I may be able to get a good deal on a tube as the big stores discontinue them.
I've got one of the large entertainment centers that has storage on the bottom, a 27" tv opening next to components, with top shelves for turntable and whatever.
That lower tv/component area is 24.5" x 47". So if I get a 30" widescreen, I can cut out the panel separating the TV and components, cut the panel into two pieces and use them for supports on either side of the TV. That may seem radical, but it saves me from buying a new entertainment center.
Any recommendations on a 30" HDTV? Circuit City has a decent deal on a Samsung.

My advice to you: Go to Froogle and seek out a Sony 30xs955. You'll truly appreciate the extra money you have to spend if you're after really fantastic, 2nd to none picture quality.

I have owned a Sony KV-34HS420 a Panasonic CT-34WX15 and a Sanyo HT-27745 and I would say that, surprisingly, the Sanyo had the best picture overall. Sanyo makes a 30" NON-SLIM CRT, which is a good thing because you get much better geometry and focus all around the screen. The only problem with Sanyo CRT's is that they do not have an invar shadow mask so they will dome if you run it at full contrast and have something pure white on screen for a couple minutes. Of Course Sony's naturally do not suffer this problem, though they do not look quite as good to me (there seems to be more phosphor interference because of how "open" the phosphor triads are on aperture grilles). I would either go with a Sanyo or a Sony, though the Sony is probably going to be harder to find, more expensive and quite a bit heavier than the Sanyo.

Thanks you nailed my position exactly. Saved me a post!
