Anybody know where I can go in Oklahoma to view a SS in person before making the leap? Need to find out if the sheen is going to bother me and the wife before making the plunge for the new RS1 headed my way.

Makomachine: I am in the same boat different state, you might call VuTec and ask them for a sample to use for viewing purposes. I have a Vutec Brite White and it is very nice and so far I still like my screen over the HS.... Reminds me of matching good speakers with Amps in your system, people hear and see things differently some of the darker screens I did not like at all with my Pearl, they where way too dark...

Garman: Thanks - I'll contact vutec and have them send me a sample when things get closer to decision time. From what I've read, I'm guessing I end up with a Carada BW 118" screen but I've got some time on that decision.

Requested my sample about a week ago and am still waiting for it. I did get a reply via e-mail two days ago asking whether I was a dealer, integrator, or end user though so hopefully I'll receive it soon.

Where in OK do you live? The SS is a substantial investment so you might want to drive to the DFW area to see one. The folks at Stereo East in Frisco (north Dallas) have one on display with the new 1080P Sharp projector. This is by far the best setup I have ever seen. They also feature the 1.5 gain BW from Vutec in their other rooms with the following projectors. Sony LCD HS 60, Sharp DLP 3000 and one other room I can not remember.

I got a sample from Vutec but could not tell much from it since it was so small. I took a gamble since I wanted a high gain screen that would work with a ceiling mount. Ended up getting the 110" SS which impacted my HD theater more than any projector I could buy in my price range. Have recently gotten the Mits 1000 and the combination far exceeds my expectation. Not quite up to the SS/Sharp combo mentioned above but at 1/10 the price!! The resulting PQ is more alike than not.

Thanks for the input - that would be better than a sample and I'm in the OKC metro, so I probably should make the drive down to see a full screen version first hand. I'm pretty sure I'll love the "pop" of it and the only thing I really want to verify is how big this "sheen" issue is going to be to me. I've heard some say it's too distracting and others say its hardly noticable so I need to find out for myself.

So you are in the "hardly noticeable" crowd?

Yeah, I am in the hardly noticeable crowd. It is not an issue with me. The uniformity of gain for all the audience is more important to me than occasionally seeing some shmmer in a scene in a movie. The only place I notice it is when there is a white sky. As I mentioned in Tryg's recent HP thread, the non-uniformity of the gain of the HP drove me crazy. I had a 110" HP before and had a chance to compare it to the SS before selling it. Believe me I was happy and relieved with the performance of the SS vs the HP since I paid about 4 times as much.

Stereo East is near the intersection of Preston Road and HWY 121 in Frisco. If you wife joins you she will undoubtedly enjoy the shopping in the huge mall just across the street.

Well haven't made it down to Stereo East yet - but plan on making the trip before finalizing my decision.

I did finally receive a SS screen sample in the mail on Saturday however. I was suprised to find it as a "hard backed" sample, but it makes sense given the way the screens are shipped and made I guess. I don't have the RS1 at this point and won't be able to "test" it until the house completes at the end of March. It's definitely "silver" and I'm not sure I can say any more about it at this point. I'll update this thread after I make the trip down to Stereo East.

You may want to give them a call to make sure they still have it on demo. I was in there right before Christmas.

Finally made it to Stereo East today and saw the Sharp/SS combo. All I can say is WOW! It was quite an amazing picture and sold me instantly on the SS for the new RS1. I can see what some people are calling "sheen" on some of the bright scenes - but had to look for it. Given that my wife didn't notice it - and I didn't notice it during viewing without specifically looking for it, it's really a non-issue. Looked like a 120" plasma - with great contrast and lots of "pop" to the image. I'm sold - now just need to get a quote from AVS to see what this baby is going to set me back. Thanks for the tip on where to see it - was worth the trip in confirmation!
