Want to upgrade from 42" Fujitsu to the 50" Fujitsu Aviamo when it comes out and trying to determine my comfort level with a bigger image.

If not possible to calculate, what would be a good approximation?

It should be strictly linear.

You'd have to sit 42/50 = 84% as close.

There is a 39% increase in screen area when you go from a 42" to a 50".

Depends on how close you are sitting to the TV now, and how close you can get.

This calculator (http://www.myhometheater.homestead.com/viewingdistancecalculator.html) will show you the maximum viewing distances in order to achieve recommended viewing angle (what you referred to as "field of view").

Note that is is SMPTE and THX recommended. I've got a 42" PDP as well, and at my viewing distance, it says I SHOULD have a 70". But if you enter your current set up and your anticipated one, you should get an idea of how close you need to be.

You can also check the attached image for an idea of min. and max. viewing distances based on size. You're viewing angle should be about the same if you get within the sweet spot for both sizes.

Edit: sorry for the delay, had some trouble with the image size...
Re-Edit: looks like one of those days... uploaded the wrong image... fixed.

Gary,

I would look at it another way. I would sit as close as possible without being aware of SDE to ruin the PQ. That will give you the greatest field of view. This distance is a bit different for different people depending on your eyesight.

I have been looking at this in stores and for me it is around 8' +/- a foot for a 50" display. Others have posted here similar results.

Further away is OK but you loose some of that theater "immersive" experience many want with a large widescreen display.

For "just TV" I guess it doesn't matter that much but for movies I think it does.

FWIW I think this is where 1080p in larger sizes around 70" will make a breakthrough. A 70" clear picture at 8' is impressive. I saw this in Sony's glass screen Qualia SXRD. Can't wait for plasma to catch up!

Cheers, :)

Gary

Looks like 6.5' is the optimal distance for 1080p. Now i wait till March for display and maybe dual format HD dvd player to come to market.

Based on the calculator, it looks like you need to sit approximately 2 feet nearer/farther to transition between 42" and 50" sizes and maintain the same field of viewing angle.
