I have the Toshiba 30HF85 30" wide CRT and the specs say that the "TV" converts all signals to 1080i. Is this true? Do I need an upconverting DVD player for the best picture or will a standard 480p output do?

Quick answer needed. Thanks.

Yes it does. An upconverted DVD player can upconvert to 1080i max. A HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player will give full 1080i detail.

OK so I do not need an upconverting DVD player, since the Toshiba 30HF85 can convert all pictures to 1080i automatically. Is this confirmed?

Next question: The 3:2 pulldown, does the TV or the DVD player do this?

1. I have a Philips upscaling dvd player, and it looks much better than what the TV can do by itself. The image is much cleaner and smoother. Get one.

2. 3:2 pulldown is performed by the TV. It's the "film" mode in the menu.

Thanks. I am looking at a Panasonic DVDS52K right now. http://circuitcity.com/ssm/Specifications-of-Panasonic-Progressive-Scan-DVD-Player-DVDS52K/sem/rpsm/oid/159400/rpem/ccd/productDetailSpecification.do#tabs

That's exactly what I paid for my Philips. Not the greatest player in the world and I'm sure that Panasonic is a bit better. That thing should do you just great thru HDMI. Just don't spend too much on an HDMI cord now. Get the cheapest one that works.

btw, that panasonic is butt-ugly. Who's running that design dept.?

err, I am going to be looking at the tv not the dvd player so I don't really care if it is not stylish.

I considered the Philips DVP5960, but it lacked the digital optical audio out. The Panasonic is ordered and awaiting the slow free shipping.

Thanks

I think you'll be happy with the upconverting DVD player.

I have a sony CRT and an Oppo player, SD DVDs look amazing upconverted to 720p or 1080i.

Haha, I know. I was just kidding. I have the Philips DVP5960 and it's a pretty sharp looking box. I don't have a digital sound receiver so the optical wasn't an issue for me, but I got the Philips because it has a handy USB 2.0 port on the front to play Divx and HD-JPEGs. Let me know how that Panny delivers in the PQ dept. Cause my Philips looks pretty good, but leaves a bit to be desired.

I ordered a 6' HDMI to go to the CRT and a 3' Digital Optical to go to the receiver from Monoprice. c o m. Total c0st was approx eleven d0llars with shipping.
