View Full Version : Guess the price of the LG combo player!!
Grubert 01-04-07, 09:07 AM This year we don't have any pre-CES polls so I think this might be fun.
Note a forum member claims an LG rep told him it would be between $800 and $1500, but I wanted to have all-inclusive options.
Note: this vote is public.
Amiable-Akuma 01-04-07, 12:10 PM Considering the fact that's it's LG we're talking about here and not someone like Pioneer but also the fact that the average "good"/trusted stand-alone BD player is already sold firmly at a thousand bucks - I'm gonna say $1199. I could see them going for a $999.99 price point if they wanted to be very aggressive/ballsy and/or if the tech behind it all wasn't top tier - but anything significantly less than that will shock me. I mean, in the net world we now live in, - an MSRP of 1K means its only 800 dollars street a few days later.
I voted what I'm willing to pay for a LG hybrid player. I'm not paying 1.5k for a pile of poo = )
Tipsy Mcfragger 01-04-07, 01:33 PM I'm gonna have to say 1199 as well, it just seems like the most reasonable estimate at the moment, considering LG is manufacturing the product in question
This is the tip of the iceberg.....you will see $599.00 1080i universal players by summer from people like momitsu and oppo...well, at least i hope you will....
Palladin 01-04-07, 02:02 PM Probably more than its worth. But I hear the Zenith version of this Veg-a-matic will be quite reasonable, and include a full set of ginzu knives. :)

LG is not that good of a name...I'm not saying their products are or are not good, but they don't have the recognition of Sony, Pioneer, Toshiba, etc. If they are smart they will list it at $499-599 and own the market until everyone else catches up. If I can pick up HD DVD for $299 (CES rumor) and PS3 for $499 (20 gig)...then anything over $798 is a no deal. Remember, you must think like Joe Six Pack.
However, this will probably go for $999 or more, and nobody will buy it.

$299 - as it'll be an optical drive only.
$1499 or more - I base this opinion on the fact that when LG put out their first HD DVR it was way overpriced. No reason to think the same won't happen here.
dialog_gvf 01-04-07, 03:35 PM $299 - as it'll be an optical drive only.
Oh, you think all they are announcing is the DRIVE? Wow, hadn't thought of that. Certainly the speed of availability would make more sense if this is only a drive.
It wouldn't be the first time "player" meant drive. "HD DVD player" is on the Xbox 360 add-on's box.

To be fair to my rep, he is GUESSING and has no inside knowledge beyond having repped the company for a fair amount of years.
Lucky Goldstar is not unlike many CEs, they make some good product (LCD screens) and some mediocre product. They are Korean, so their costs are lower than many.
hdkhang 01-04-07, 07:32 PM What do you guys think of the reputation between LG and Samsung? Both being Korean.
In Australia, they have pretty similar reputations, Samsung slightly better.
But if Samsung is releasing a $799 BD player next year (guessing again based on announcement of 20% cost reduction) then I'd say the LG would have to be dearer.
But then again if it is the optical drive only... that's something different... wonder what that will do for the HTPC crowd if it is for that market.
Cheers...

krinkle 01-04-07, 08:48 PM I will try and find the link again but one of the original stories said it would retail for $1200.
Means you will probably be able to find one for $1000 a few months after they come out.
My concern is how terribly buggy will they be?
orogogus 01-04-07, 09:12 PM I guessed $800 since if it costs more than the price of the cheapest HD DVD player and the cheapest BD player, it's a non-starter. Add to that LG doesn't have the best reputation in the US and that's my (likely wishful) opinion. I agree that there is a really good chance that comes in north of $1k and no-one will buy it.

Couldn't have said it better! :p
Rob Zuber 01-04-07, 09:41 PM There are two different devices, so this will get confusing:

GGW-H10N: BD-burner and HD-DVD player: $1200
BH-100: BD player and HD-DVD player: price unknown
Head Shot 01-04-07, 09:53 PM Would have chosen $ 399 or less if available. Both format share overwhelming technical similarities. HD DVD future announced player price of lower rather than higher is more likely. So HD DVD for $ 300 and tack on a dying format for another $ 50-100 would be about right. One story stated that PS3 cost of BD added about $ 200 to its price.
If they wanted to sell them like sliced cheese they would go for the $399 or less range.
AnthonyP 01-06-07, 12:10 PM I went 1300 but would depend when it comes out
William 01-06-07, 01:01 PM If they wanted to sell them like sliced cheese they would go for the $399 or less range.
Not if a slice of cheese cost you almost $1000 to make. It is not so important what the first player will cost but it is how common and what they will be selling for in a couple of years.
Grubert 01-07-07, 10:45 AM 1199 it is! (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8203311&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat87100050009&id=1165610378688)
