Warner Bros. to Show Blu-ray/HD DVD Total HD Disc at CES

Way back in September, we reported that engineers at Warner were developing a triple-standard Blu-ray, HD DVD and DVD disc, but unlike promised format war components from Ricoh, Samsung and others, it appears as though the movie studio will actually throw a wrench in the market.

(LG, which "considered" a dual-format player last March and then decided against it, has just announced they will be showing a hybrid drive at CES next week.)

Warner Bros., which is a backer of both formats, will show the Total HD disc at CES next week, which can play both Blu-ray and HD DVD movies, reports the NY Times.

Barry M. Meyer, the chairman and chief executive of Warner Brothers, said in an interview that the company came up with the Total HD disc after concluding that neither Blu-ray nor HD-DVD was going the way of Betamax anytime soon.

"The next best thing is to recognize that there will be two formats and to make that not a negative for the consumer," Mr. Meyer said. "We felt that the most significant constituency for us to satisfy was the consumer first, and the retailer second. The retailer wants to sell hardware and doesn't want to be forced into stocking two formats for everything. This is ideal for them."
The Total HD disc won't include a standard DVD version, however.
