If you were looking for a "own both, enjoy both" option, why did you vote for "own both, enjoy Blu-Ray"? Why not "own both, enjoy HD-DVD"?

Why? Because it was the first option on the list. No other reason at all. It would have been the same either way. I own a HDA1 and a PS3... I like both equally.

Own HD-XA1 and PS3. Prefer HD DVD.

I prefer Blu-ray but I own an HD DVD. 'Video meliora, proboque; Deteriora sequor' (which has nothing to do with video btw :D )

I voted "I own players of both formats, prefer HD-DVD" simply because there are more titles that I've bought that are HD DVD. As far as PQ, I don't see enough of a difference to say that one is a lot better than the other. But AQ is a different story. I do prefer Blu-ray's AQ. However, the actual movie and content is my main concern and so far, HD DVD wins in my household. This will probably change in the next few months, though. The Blu-ray studios have some great titles that I'm interested in.

You won't here that from me. Blu-ray looks and sounds terrific already... anything else is icing on the cake.

Since the release of HD DVD and Blu-ray last year, my DVD buying habits changed dramatically. I wasn't sure what I was going to do about HD discs, but when Microsoft announced the price of their HD DVD player for the 360 and I found out that HD DVDs are region free and reasonably priced I made my mind up to get one and currently it's all I have.

It's not that I prefer HD DVD necessarily, because I've never seen Blu-ray to be able to compare, but the cost of the 360 add-on made me go for HD DVD and the quality of the films I've got/seen so far has been more than good enough for my needs. (Just give us the DTS encoder and official VGA and component cables with 5.1 analogue connections so I can make use of my amp's empty 5.1 analogue inputs and the 360 add-on's HD audio decoding capabilities, please Microsoft. Who needs HMDI? :) )

Until there are films I really want that are Blu-ray only, then I'm happy to just have HD DVD.

The poll misses... I have more than one player in only one format, and I am format agnostic... and cheap... so HD gets the nod, Tosh stand alone player and an XBOX HD DVD addon attached to HTPC. Two HD players were cheaper than one Blu-Ray. My case is not a preference, can't say what I think about Blu-Ray I can't afford it.. might like it better than HD DVD, who knows. Anway since there was not an answer that fit me, I did not vote.

Putting dual format disc in a dual format player will cause the player to go insane as it cannot figure which to play and how to play it. :D :D :D :D

This is a difficult question to answer for me. I have both an A-1 and a PS3. I think that overall HD-DVD software is better but my PS3 is a MUCH better, smoother, more refined player. So how should I answer ?

As for not having the options "Own both, prefer both" and "Own both, prefer none", that didn't fit with what I had in mind, so I didn't add those options.

I guess Im anodd ball of sorts.
I own the Xbox-360 add-on which is going to be given to my Daughter who is a big gamer,and plan on buying either A stand alone Toshiba or a Lite-on when available for my HD-DVD library ( I preferr HD-DVD ),but I also have been keeping an eye on either the $400 Blu-ray player I read was supposed to be announced at CES this year or the Playstation 3.
I've never been a big gamer,actually only had experience untill recently with Playstation both 1 & 2 (the slimline PS2 was given to me by my dughter for my Birthday this past year).
I only enjoy a handfull of games really so if I do get the PS3 it will mainly be for playback of Blu-Ray movies and my PS2 games.
I dont know if that would make me a fanboy or not,as I've really only played the PS games so thats why I am leaning twords the PS3.
Nothing at all against the Xbox,which I bought for a unbelievable bargain,and which my daughter will just love to get her hands on.
So the Xbox will be going to a good home and get much more use for what it was intended for,gameing.
On the HD plus side if I do get the PS3 and use it for the movies only ,plus my PS2 games,with no intention of buying at least at the moment any PS3 games I hear It'll cost Sony $300 to sell the PS3 to me.

I have an A1 that I've left on 1.4 and it stutters less than my XA1 with 2.0....on the discs that will play on 1.4 . I'm gonna sit back and see what hardware options emerge. It might be intresting to have one of those LG combi players...? Or, an Onkyo HD-DVD spinner...?

You're right, in so much as I'm not gonna be happy till I have a player I like. I'm gonna play wait and see before I buy another Toshiba just yet. The damned XA1 suprises me and work flawlessly at times....it's confounding way too much... :)

(Same reasons as I've posted in a couple other similar threads - below....)

I highly prefer the physical characteristics of BD. They seem to have much better resistance to minor smudges and scuffing. I've also always hated how the two halves of DVDs / HD DVDs are exposed in the center ring. (I've had a couple DVDs with cracked / shattered centered rings because of this + poor case design.)

Still - I've been very disappointed with most BD releases to date. Picture quality is getting much better, but they often seem to lack a a good feature that the HD DVD offers (e.g. TrueHD). In many cases, I'm even reluctant to upgrade from SD DVD to the BD version because the titles are stripped of extras (e.g. Kingdom of Heaven, Terminator 2), which I enjoy greatly.

I guess I prefer HD DVD in principal as well. They have delivered everything that was promised and executed the releases very well. Their approach to HD on disc was elegant and efficient.

BD on the other hand has the extra fancy hardware (with a price tag to match) and more corporate support, yet continue to squander their technical advantages (MPEG-2 & Uncompressed PCM?), and release titles that I have felt fail to live up to expectations.

Still HD DVD all the way! :)

Poll's closed so I can't vote but as the owner of both formats (3 HD-DVD players A1, A2 and A20 and 1 Blu-ray) and being one that avoids the rampant fanboism that seems prevolent on both sides of the fence I would say that I lean slightly towards Blu-ray at this point.

I own easily over 100 Blu-rays and 100 HD-DVD's and I've NEVER experienced a skip, stutter, or problem on a Blu-ray disk I've owned but I've had easily over 7+ "glitches" watching various HD-DVD's over the past year.

Just my experience and .02
