I was looking for a Video Scaler on ebay for my DirecTV DVR with S-Video output which is connected to Sony Bravia 40S2000.

I came across this Ultra AV S-Video to VGA Converter Scaler~1024x768 Pixel on ebay.

It says it can convert the S-Video to 1024x768 VGA. Will it improve the picture quality of my Directv.

Has anybody used this product?

It's OK but don't expect miracles for that kind of price. You do get what you pay for image quality wise.

Will it improve the picture quality of my DirectvNo. Your TV already has a scaler and Sony's internal scaler is probably better than the cheap ebay scaler.

Plus, your bravia is 1366 x 768, so you'd actually be scaling twice... 720x480 from the s-video to 1024x768 by the ebay scaler; then to 1366x768 by the internal bravia scaler. Double scaling should always be avoided.

Your biggest problem is that you're watching standard definition on a High Definition television. You should upgrade to HD service and your picture quality will improve dramatically.

Agreed 100%! Buying an HD Panel without upping the viewing source to HD is a crime and cost far less than a VP - get a second gen HD DVD player, a Netflix HD Membership with an HD STB and your cooking without a VP do live off S-Video makes no sense to me.

S-video and 480i will still be Turdvision no matter what VP you add to that scenario. ;) )

Mostly I watch some foreign channels on directv which are not telecast in HD . So, even if I upgrade to HD reciever, I do not think it will improve the signal without doing some video processing. That is why I was looking some video upscaler.

What would you do in my situation to improve the picture?

i have the same situation. i hve the bravia klv 32u100m and i would also like to improve the sd picture quality. maybe adjusting the picture settings wud help. i also need help on adjusting the picture settings so if anyone can help me please. tnx

It might. It is an older highend scaler. It supports your screens native resolution. (720p) Here is the link...

An iScan Plus (or any of the models that supercede it) will do a very nice job of converting NTSC SDTV to 480p even if the mandatory upscaling to 1080i or 720p is done by someone else. Actually I would prefer one that had component video 480i input as well, I think you need to get the iScan version 2 at least.

If your cable or Directtv subscription includes some analog channels, these channels may or may not look better but will probably not look worse coming to the TV or iScan as composite.

The question you have to figure out for yourself, with the aid of friends, strangers, stores, or magazine articles, is whether your TV's built in scaler does as well or more.

I'm not sure about the Ultra AV you mentioned. Since it is always desirable to audition it first (unless you have friends, strangers, stores, or magazine articles to go by), I would at least suggest you not get it via eBay.

I heartily disagree. There is nothing wrong with a sleek panel TV above the fireplace even if it is playing SDTV. I would hold off on a hi-def DVD player until after I have a HDTV with HDMI/HDCP input (no hurry). No sense getting stuck with a player that loses half the resolution going to your specific TV every time you put in a copy protected DVD.
