I have been going back and forth on either a projector or a lcd tv, For the price the projector would be by far the better deal in my eyes. My room is kind of small it is 11x11. Would a projector work for me in this room and if so what size screen could I go with that would produce a image that isnt blurry, from sitting so close to it. If I can have one looking at the Optoma HD70 and the Mitsubishi 1000 one. Also the projector would be on a shelf on the back wall or on a table for sure. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Also forgot to add my ceilings are 7 foot high and the wall I would put projector screen on is a little over 11' long diagonally which should make for a nice screen size. Thanks.

You can't put either of those on a shelf due to the offset. What will your seating distance be, 9 to 10 feet? Assuming 10', you can probably use a screen size about 90" diagonal. You'll need to check the calculator to see if either will give you your desired screen size.

Not really sure how to use that calculator but from what I saw at 11' it looked to be about 80'' screen size for the Optoma, but like I said I know nothing about projectors never owned one. So could the projector be put on a table then or not? Wish I had about 2 or 3 more feet for throw distance but it is what it is lol. Thanks for reply.

You'll get much more flexibility out of an LCD projector.

i'm in literally the same boat with the room size. Tax return is coming and I want the mitsu, but if I can't get up to 90" I don't know if it's worth it. Maybe I'll just hold off...

Just remember this...

You don't want a screen so big that you miss something in the movie, sport, etc.

I have my couch at 12' from the screen and my HD70 projector at 11.2' with an 80" (16:9) screen. My friend has a 110" screen seating at 13.5' away and I have more comments from friends stating that my screen is much more pleasing to watch, because the whole picture is in view at the same time. With an overly big screen, you have to physically move your eyes and head to watch the entire screen. Which could lose the audience when watching movies, sports, etc., in turn won't make your theater a joy to use.

IMO...I would keep the screen around 75-85" (16:9) with seats around the 9-10' mark.

My 2 cents...

I've been lurking around here for about a year now but I finally began installing the HT gear I've accumulated last weekend.

My room is 15X20 so I ceiling mounted my HD72 11'6" from the front wall. I have a 92" Draper pull down screen. The image is very pleasing and easy to watch at this distance. I experimented with a 100" and 106" image on the wall before I bought the screen and it was tiring to watch, especially with no ambient light in the room.

I set the zoom on the projector to nominal (middle of the zoom range) so I would be able to zoom in and out some just in case I wanted a bigger image for some reason Remember to set the pj to the middle of the range to give yourself some flexibility in terms of image size.

Thanks alot for the responses guys I appreciate it, I have another room I could use the projector in if i have too, I would have a 13' throw distance in the other room, which should give me a good screen size. Me myself I think a screen in the 90'' range would be just fine for me. Another question how do you actually set up the screen to work with the projector, do you just mount the screen and adjust projector, or put an image on the wall then mount the screen, this all new to me but it sure is going to be fun when I am done with everything.

I made a DIY screen made from 3/8" drywall.

I mounted the 4' x 8' sheet on the wall. Painted the whole piece and got my screen the size I wanted it. I ended up 75" wide ~80" 16:9 screen. I turned on the projector with no source, so I got a full screen size blue display. I use a VERY small light pencil mark on the outer edge and used that as my guide.

Took the drywall sheet down and cut and wrapped 1" x 4" poplar wood with felt and "speaker cover" material from JoAnn's. (OK...my wife did that part and she never lets me forget it). And "Pinched" the wall material. By pinched I mean, I use a 1" x 2" poplar on the back and drill in from the back through the drywall and into the black felt/speaker cover wrapped poplar border.

AWESOME!!! So awesome that my neighbor came over, was standing about 4' away from my screen and said, "WOW! 80" hmmm! I didn't think plasma screens came in 80"." It's not plasma, it's projection!!!
