Recently, I’ve been having a problem with one of my 5080 units. While watching live TV, I’ll hear a click and then the sound stops completely. If I turn off the unit, wait awhile, and turn it back on, nothing happens. BUT, if I reboot the unit, and then leave it off for a while, when I turn it back on, the sound is okay. Everthing else seems to work fine.

Is this intermittent problem the sign of a dying machine, or might something else cause this anomaly? I searched the board, but couldn’t find a similar situation.

We are not ignoring you. I've never read of anyone with that same problem.

You might try unplugging everything/all cords from the replaytv and unplug the replaytv from the wall then let it sit for a few hours, or a few days. It's definately worth the time but may not get you any results.

Thanks, Ice. The problem continues, albeit intermittently. If I need to replace the unit, the question is what do I replace it with? I've got two other ReplayTV units, all talking very nicely with each other and with users across the internet who share missed programs.

What's the future for ReplayTV? Is it worth investing in another unit, even without some of the features that made me buy it in the first place?

Is the problemed unit a lifetime unit, or month to month?

If it's a lifetime unit email member 'Mikeyboy' and he'll probably sell you a working motherboard (or whatever repairs are needed).

If it's monthly, probably just cough up the $$ for another one on ebay.

Last thought. This smells like a hardware issue, but it's always better to try a different freshly imaged HD if that's something you can do. You never know how a few bad sectors on the OS part of the drive will make the replaytv behave.

...

As far as investing in another unit, i think it's safe as long as you know your needs and won't want HD capability shortly after the re-purchase. I figure as long as ReplayTV continues to sell Lifetime subscriptions you have at least 3 years left. I don't believe the guide data costs RTV much*.

the biggest risk is falling in love with HD soon after the purchase

About a week ago I was watching a football game on live TV (I wasn't recording it) when I noticed that when I caught up to live TV, the sound went out, but if I hit pause, waited a couple seconds, hit pause again, the sound would come back. As long as I was watching it delayed by at least a couple of seconds, it would play OK, but as soon as I was back to live, the sound would go out. Very strange. I haven't seen this before or since.

I should be careful. I'd like to back up on what I said and say the first logical step is to try a fresh software image on a reliable HD, or if you have more time to burn than money at least put a fresh image on your current HD.

This all may be caused by a tired data on the HD or a bad image write
