View Full Version : Does Best Buy no longer carry HD DVD new releases?
efranzen 01-05-07, 02:30 PM Is anyone else having problems finding recently released HD DVD titles at Best Buy? I haven't been able to find Casino or The Deer Hunter anywhere. According to the Best Buy's store inventory tracker, there is not a single store in Washington state that carries either of those titles.

I was thinking the same thing. I prefer to buy my HD-DVD (Universal) releases at BB for the rewards points. The last title either of the BB's near me had as a new release was Field of Dreams and Hulk.
I am not sure why they no longer seem to be stocking them as frequently.

nick_danger 01-05-07, 03:01 PM I bought "Hulk" and "Fearless" on launch day. The store near me (flagship store - Richfield, MN) also has Lady in the Water, Scary Movie 4, Casino, and Breakfast Club. There were a couple other very recent releases, but I don't remember. According to staff, HD-DVDs fly off the shelves pretty quick. I was in line with a guy that bought Fearless when I got mine, so there are definitely a lot of people "striking while the iron is hot".
Yeah man, it's probably because they are selling so dang fast. newegg.com has a bunch of their titles on backorder too. I think these stores are underestimating the amount of titles they will sell. Start worrying when you see 10 of the same title collecting dust on the shelf.

Agreed.
I bought my A2 and a few titles the week before Christmas and there was a decent selection. I went back a week later to get the 2 Free Discs that they were then offerring on the A2, and they were pretty wiped out.

I have been looking for Scorpion king at my BB and both say they wont be carrying them, they don't know why? Also the last ones they got in that was new was Incredible hulk. CC did have Lady in the Water, but no Scorpian king
They just can't meet demand. The average BB seems to only get at most 10 copys of new movies. Vs 300+ of the DVD version. I think more pepole are buy next gen movies then was thought.
BB is also just about the only place with a real selection. most bargin stores like target and walmart at most have 5-30 tittles. Vs BB 100-150.
But my local BB has been out of superman returns a few times. I've noticed smallvile and sopranos are sitting around but that's do to the high price more then anything..
BD was pretty low yesterday, but I think it was just all the ps3 owners burning up their giftcards and wanting somthing besides will farrell, why they used that movie is beyond me..
But back to the OP, the last few week my BB had most of the movies in stock on the day of, although I've yet to find forbiden planet or christmas vaction otherwis I've seen everything else day of.
My local Walmart and BB both carry HD DVD, and have since the format was introduced.
Since BD has been introduced, the shelf space dedicated to HD DVD has been reduced and BD has pretty much taken over.
I personally wouldn't tough BD with a 10 ft pole, based on the price and pq I've seen thus far, but, it does seem to be growing fast.
One reason might be that the HD DVD titles are selling and the BD releases are accumulating. Hopefully that is not wishful thinking on my part.
BB has a higher profit potential from BD, so it comes as no surprise that they would aggresively market that format. Perhaps not having the newer released titles in HD DVD is another subtile way of leading customers to their higher profit product.
That is why I am getting BD next month...
JosephShaw 01-05-07, 06:08 PM That is why I am getting BD next month...
I'm having a hard time locating BD movies at BB as well, so don't get your hopes up. I'm buying from Amazon now.
mikey p 01-05-07, 07:10 PM Yes, that's exactly right. You hit it on the head, Ronald! That's exactly what is happening. Yep.
Not sure I'd say that, however, in the past month they (BB) seem to have a trend going to get you to buy from their on-line operation vs. putting the titles out in the B&M stores? The special titles IE: Chronos have always been on line only. In as much as HD DVD is "cheap and easy to make" per many experts here, I have to wonder why the B&M in general don't have the new disc's each week, I like others here have to buy on line now for one more reason, bummer, YMMV.
BTW: At the BB I shop they seem to have BD's OK? HD DVD does not seem to even be being re-stocked. :(
BB here in Florida seems to drop the ball with new HD releases...So I just forgo the points I can accumulate at BB and just go to Moviestop which seems to get every new movie at Amazon prices...I went earlier this week to get Deer Hunter and they sold out, I went today and they had 2 on the shelf........

no Scorpion King at my area BB's either. Only non-online place I saw it was The Movie Store.
Every walmart I've been in in any state recently has all but stopped carrying both blu-ray and HD DVD. A few of them used to have tons and tons of stock.
Arutha_conDoin 01-05-07, 08:19 PM The BB I go to is hit and miss on what they have. It seems they are either out of the newer titles, or just not stocking it regular enough. I have never seen V for Vendetta in at that store. I do have a $20 reward coupon that I plan on using, but I want Dune or The Mummy and neither of those movies was in when I last checked. So I'm hoping next time I go in that they will have it. The older movies seem to be in stock which is not to surprising since most people already have those movies. Funny thing is I don't see to many people looking at either format when I am in there.
oh_riginal 01-05-07, 08:55 PM In Washington State, the Fry's in Renton has an awesome selection of HD-DVDs, but the last time I checked, quite a few newer titles were sold out already. I figured it was the holidays that wiped those out. But unlike the local Best Buy stores, they at least stock new releases, and restock them when they sell out. At least from my experience there so far.

I'm only about 5 minutes from that Fry's store and I've checked there regularly as well. They have not had either of those 2 movies either. I was just there again today looking as well. Fry's has set up a huge display of HD DVD and Blu-Ray movies right as you walk into the store though. It immediately catches your eye.
Others mentioned not being able to find The Scorpion King. I just checked Best Buy's website and that is yet another title that not a single store in Washington state has.

Mine carries new releases but they don't have but a few in stock on release day so they sell out fast.
Oh yes, I usually buy everything from Amazon so is not a problem..
I just want the movies PERIOD. There's too many movies coming out in BR and nothing at al in HDDVD.. I mean NEW MOVIES.. Not old remastered films in HDDVD..

One of the *friendly* salespeople at my local BB in the metro Detroit area outright told me that Blu-Ray will be the dominant media, and they are trying to keep the HD-DVD stock as low as possible. The HD section has been pretty bare these last few weeks since the Christmas rush. The local Wal-Mart had a copy of V for Vendetta while I still have not sen it at BB.
Now that I think about it, I haven't seen a new HD title on the shelf at BB since 'The Grinch' came out around Thanksgiving. That's just sad.
dr hypothesis 01-06-07, 03:23 AM The Best Buy in town here hasn't had any new releases in a month.
efranzen 01-06-07, 11:04 AM I just checked V for Vendetta too. None of those in Washington state either. I just don't understand this. The Best Buy closest to me does have tons of HD DVD's. They have a big section that shares space with Blu-Ray and it takes up half of one of their entire shelves in the DVD area. Of that half, BD takes one half and HD DVD the other. The HD DVD and BD parts are always stocked full.
The most recent titles I bought from there were the MI box set and Superman1.
efranzen and oh,
I too shop the Fry's(work next door), and Friday they did not have Casino but they did have The Matador. In the past they have a been a day or 2 late on new releases but they did get them in. I gave up on BB at SouthCenter long ago.
Have you guys seen Casino locally anywhere for a decent price, like $19.99?
Thanks.
Best buy in my city has blu ray and hd dvd movies, reasonable selection.
But walmart seems to be cheaper and they are all starting to carry them as well.

my best buy actually has a larger HDDVD section compared to the BD section.
kevinlc 01-09-07, 12:15 PM My BB actually has HD DVD new releases on the date, but sometimes I have to use store pick-up option to get them out of the back.
jayrader 01-09-07, 12:20 PM I'm not sure why anyone wanting HD software of any kind would go into Best Buy. They have permanently lost me as a customer because of their ineptitude with HD DVD and BluRay. Amazon has served this need just fine.
Brad1963 01-09-07, 12:21 PM The Best Buys (3 of them) near my apartment all have big selections of HD DVD's including new titles. This past weekend in thier ad they were advertising the new Toshiba player with 2 free HD DVD's instantly with purchase.

Periods, sentences, commas, paragraphs, correct spelling and grammar are all your friends. Please don't ignore them, or they will feel sad, the way I feel sad for you :(
I didn't think third graders were into HT gear.

Is avs full of teachers? we talk about HT gear not the spelling if you cant read his spelling then skip it don\'t insult the person.
Today i picked up a couple of hd-dvds at best buy. Their was a cart blocking the hd-dvd section most likely unintentionally. I did move 2 carts to block the blu ray section. No it wasnt any trouble since i was with 3 friends and they gave me a hand took us all less then 1 minute. So no it wasnt a waste of my time or theirs i had to move them either way to get to the hd-dvd section
