I didn't get around to posting progress shots so I'll just post everything I've done up to now.

This is about 10 months progress on and off between working full time and taking some classes. I did everything myself except for the carpet. This is my first time doing a lot of this stuff (first home) so I'm pretty happy with how it came out. I'm taking a break until March, then I'll finish the bathroom and kitchen cabinets/bar.

The ceiling was very low, so it presented some challenges (hence the plumbing in the I-beam). I ended up using the Ceiling Link system that attaches directly to the floor joists.

Thanks to all AVSers that answered some of my questions over the last year (made a new username recently).

They are just regular glass block basement windows that had small vents in them. I just framed around them with drywall.

The Ceiling Link system worked great. It's like Ceiling Max, but cheaper...the main difference being that you have to cut the cross Ts yourself...no big deal. It really saved me a great amount of headroom. I think the only con I could find was that when looking down the long runs of track, they are not *perfectly* straight, but pretty damn close...I think that's just the nature of the product. It's a somewhat flimsy plastic as opposed to normal drop track which is metal. You can't really notice it...although I would definitly recommend using the recessed tiles like I did.

Great job scissorfightX!!!

I was in the same boat you were. I just finished mine too and most everything I did was pretty new to me. I did about 85% of my basement myself and I just have the bathroom to finsih up as well. It can be a bit frustrating and slow going, but it's all worth it when it's done!!! :D

The wife was on my case all the time when I was working in mine, but I think she loves it more than I do now that it's done. It took me about 5 months to do mine and that was while my wife is pregnant (about a week to go), got a new dog, attending school.....oh yeah, I didn't mention work in there.....

Once again, really nice job!!! Enjoy, you deserve it!!!

Well I was an industrial painter for a few years out of high school, so I know how to paint. Never really had done any construction, electrical, plumbing, woodwork, or tile before I bought my first home. I pretty much just buy some books, buy the tools, and go with it...and call my old man if I have a question :D I've done some drywall but never from start to finish. That was probably the worst part. I am kind of a perfectionist with drywall so it took a bit longer than it should have.

My first real project was my upstairs kitchen, which I remodeled. It included new tile, ripping out the soffit and adding trim to and refinishing old oak cabinets to modern white with black trim. I could hardly believe the difference we achieved without spending money on new cabinets.

I wish I would have kept track of the total cost of the basement, but I didn't. I probably should have been...I'd estimate ~10k once it's all said and done. I was definitely trying to keep costs down so I could spend it in other areas *cough...tv...cough*.

That is the nicest home theater installation I believe I've ever seen. Anybody can set a tv on a stand, but you have done such a great job with the components, and wiring and just the entire layout. It just looks perfect!!

Excellent work. It really looks nice, especially the huge Sony.

Queston though: where did you get those short side audio stands? One of those would be perfect next to the rather minimal Samsung TV stand that's holding my JVC 56FN97. My wife and I went round and round about what to put the TV on. She finally settled on this one as 'bearable'. It looks nice enough but it's too damn small for all the HT gear.

Nice job on the home theater. Wish I could afford that, wish I had a basement for that matter.

I am in search for a wide low boy TV stand. Yours is real nice, what brand is it?

It's still in the same state as the pics I posted of it. I'm taking a break until March or April, then I'll finish the bathroom and do the Kitchenette cabinets + bar. I will definitely update this thread with any progress.

That is this (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayMoreInfoAccessories-Start?ProductSKU=SURS51U) Sony stand. It is specifically made with an indentation for the 60" or 70" SXRD XBR2s, so I wouldn't recommend it for another TV. If you really like it though, you could try to fill the indentation with some particle board or something. It is a great stand for a 70" TV in that it is really low, but still fits my largish center channel.

Paint is Sherwin Williams

Main room is 6108 - Latte
Office is 6249 - Storm Cloud

I used Duration Matte finish, which I highly recommend. It's more expensive, but it gives the low sheen of a flat paint with the durability of a satin.

Home Depot. They have them at Lowes as well.

I used Home Depot's General home improvement book (big orange book ~30 bucks) which I think is a fantastic book for any home owner.

Electrical and Plumbing - I also used more detailed electrical and plumbing books (smaller, ~$15-20)...all from home depot.

For the metal studs I found some installation instructions on the web, unfortunately I can't remember where...but it's not complicated.

Drywall - Here is a great site for drywall finishing: http://www.drywallschool.com/protips.htm specifically the 1st/2nd coats for recessed and butt joints sections.

Ceramic Tile - Best tile site out there for any questions at all: http://www.johnbridge.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?forumid=1

i got the pole wrap stuff from home depot. im confused on whether to install the top and bottom caps or not. did you put the caps on after the carpet or before the carpet was layed? also do you trip on the bottom caps? if the caps were put on before the carpet, how hard was it to cut the carpet around the octogon caps?

scissorfightX
03-23-07, 01:50 PM
I waited until carpet was installed to put on the bottom cap. Also, I only used the cap that matched the top cap...I did not use the extra base that was supplied because it looked like too much. When just using the one cap, your feet don't really get that close to it.

Once the carpet was installed I simply added the bottom cap with liquid nails. It's plenty sturdy, although that method would really only work with rolled berber or a similar low-pile carpet.

scissorfightx... can't help but say what a wonderful finish on your basement!
Questions though. Did you insulate the ceiling? What room is above the tv room?
Do those drop ceiling panels make much of a difference with sound from above?

Again, I think you did a really great job and hope you'll be by my way soon to help with my media room finish! :D :D

i just tried to install the pole wrap and i had problems getting the seams right...one poll looks ok but my other poll doesnt have the complete roundness like it should. some spots look flat because the seams were not perfect...also it doesnt seem like the liquid nails is holding to the pole very good. if i push on the pole wrap it seems mushy not tight against the pole.

Did you insulate the ceiling? What room is above the tv room?
Do those drop ceiling panels make much of a difference with sound from above?

I did insualte the ceiling, only just above the TV. Partly to decrease duct noise in the basement and partly to decrease noise upstairs. It did help, but the master bedroom is above the TV :/ ...but I really don't care to blast the sound on weeknights anyway so no big deal.

GREAT JOB!! could you post some shots of the bathroom and wetbar...curious to see how they turned out
Unfortunately I've been too busy with work this month to do much. I'm going to get back to work on the bathroom Monday probably. Cabinets/Bar will probably have to wait until late summer because I am going to gut our master bath after the basement bath here is done.

Hmmm...I did not have that problem at all. Did you get the real Liquid Nails and not some no-brand stuff? The regular LN dries rock hard and should adhere to pretty much anything.

Did you maybe have one more row (strip) than what was needed to cover the diameter of the pole? I could see how that would cause what you described.

When I first scrolled to the pic with the TV my jaw dropped. Wowser that is a sweet TV. I love your setup (not only because of the 360). The only possible suggestion I could make is maybe add a mopad (http://www.auralex.com/sound_isolation_mopad/sound_isolation_mopad.asp) under your center to angle it up a bit. Other than that, looks deadly! :)

this is where the real gaming take place. last thing to finish the basement is the bar that will go to the left of these tables. i've been too lazy to finish.

Scissor,

I am amazed at how well everything you did turned out. You are a craftsman if I have ever seen one!
I have a question about your HTPC, did you build that yourself? I have decided that this is one of my next technology projects, and would like to know where you got this and if you built it where you found the information to do so.

Again, I have never seen a more nicely done HT room, ever!

thanks

yeah i built the HTPC myself. ordered all parts from newegg.

if you have no experience building one, search for some guides online, there are a ton.

so i think i'm finally going to get off my ass and finish my basement setup bar area. here's where it stands now:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2134/2381410804_5dc15ce2e3_o.jpg

i have to do the cabinets, counters, and i'm going to convert the bottom half of the fridge to a kegerator to hold 2 6th barrels, extending the lines out the side and up on the counter for a dual tap.

here's what i have in mind (quick and ugly)

Did you do anything to seal up where the PVC exits the fridge to not overwork the fridge?

yup, spray foam insulation around the pvc and then sealed both ends with silicone

Very, very nice, and nice taste in beer too. Only question: what is the depth of your bar area? I have a similar looking space, however, it is only about 7 feet deep by 9 feet wide. My initial plan was to not have a "bar" but just have it as a walk up area. But your space looks good. and I think I could fit it in to my space.
Thanks,
Shaun

that's more space than i had in that small area. the actual area was about 8' x 5'7". i started the shortened 18" base cabinets near the end of the 5'7", so the depth from the back of the bar to the end of the countertop over the stools is about 7'6".

Where did you find the 18" base cabinets? Where they special order?

8'x5'7", it looks much larger than that. Great work!

yes, they were the cheapest special-order cabinet line that home depot had.

American Woodword I believe. i was happy with them for the price.
