It is friday and I just received a copy of Discovery Atlas Brazil.
I am
expecting several friends to watch tonight. so before I show I want to make sure everything is looking good.
Dam, it looks so bad I am embaressed to show this on my HT.
I know it has to be the transfer.
I watched in a standard channel and looked 1000% better. outch.
Has anyone here got this HDDVD? can you tell me if could be a defective one?
I order one in BD but is back order.
PS if anyone would be interested to see it I will land it to you.
I would like to see if it is realy the trasfer or my equip. malfunction
I received my box set yesterday but haven't had the chance to watch Brazil yet. I watched China and wasn't impressed but was blown away by how good Italy looked. I'll try and watch Brazil this weekend and let you know what I thought.

That would be realy nice dkny75, please check if you see spirkling on dark scenes.
I don;t think is my set up.
I have the XA1 to a DVDO VP30 to a ruby through OPTICAL HDMI cable and all are connected to a line conditioner :)
Please let me know. thanks
Man, I was afraid of that. The original broadcast looked good but not great like other material on Discovery HD or INHD. Out of all of them I thought Brazil and Italy looked the best so I'm disappointed that Brazil is not a great transfer on HD DVD. I particularly remember the Carnival shots @ the end of the documentary the were the best I had ever seen of the festival. I wonder if the Blue Ray transfers are any better.

That is sad, why would the broadcasts with limited bit rate look better than the discs?

That's so sad. After seeing them broadcast on Discovery HD Theater i was all set to buy the set when it shipped but after seeing your initial reviews, i guess i'll be renting them instead at some point and saving my money for more deserving HD discs.

I ordered in BD too, but it is back order, I will post on BD forum to avoid conflict.

thats too bad, It looked great on there HD channel. Especially some nice shots of some Brazilian women
Ok, the majority of the disc looks remarkable. I'm not sure why type of HD cameras they used but it seems that in the dark scenes of Sao Paulo you can see some digital noise. The best looking scenes are those of the Amazon, Carnival and Easter. Overall the number of bad scenes are very little compared to the ones that pop out and look better than the HD broadcast.
Angeli662, the sparkles you talk of appeared when I watched the broadcast version also so it just might be the way it was shot or the type of digital cameras they used. Remember digital cameras have a problem in low light.
Let me just say that if any of you enjoyed the broadcast version of this show, you'll love the HD DVD. Also this disc, unlike China and Italy, was encoded in VC1. I'm not sure what the BD counterparts used but I wouldn't imagine they look any different.

dkny75, I agree with you on most of the time it look good, except on dark scenes, even though I watched in STV not HD, I don't remember the dark scenes being so bad  ,
Anyway, everybody love it, they were not pick as I am, :)
I am still curious to see how the BD version look like.
