good one .. :D
What exactly does this mean, "in relation to CES"? Do you mean these are the titles that will be announced at CES?
NickFoley 01-05-07, 06:13 PM What exactly does this mean, "in relation to CES"? Do you mean these are the titles that will be announced at CES?
Yes. Box covers, screen caps and all.
rlsmith 01-05-07, 06:24 PM Thanks for the post.
We should mistrust announcements that do not have a date. Apparently, once a date is associated, the studio feels commited to the channel; without a date, they move things around arbitrarily.
Last year, about 90% of the "dated" announcements actually occuredon both formats, with only about 50% of the "coming soon" announcements actually showing up.
We are still all waiting for Pirates and Harry Potter, which were "coming soon" last year.
heavyharmonies 01-05-07, 06:27 PM Nice. For BR you include all of the titles that were announced PRIOR to CES (several of the titles have been discussed for quite some time now), including those without specific dates, but for HD-DVD you will only list titles whose release dates are made public *at* CES.
Not that I would ever expect you to be even-handed, given your track record.
HD DVD
None yet.
What movie is that?
g5555sim 01-05-07, 06:48 PM What movie is that?
good one :D
JosephShaw 01-05-07, 07:00 PM Still no Pirates movies...

Just got done watching Reign on HD DVD (Japanese Import) if BD is equal No one will be disappointed. :)
Bill Hunt 01-05-07, 08:22 PM Just to let you all know, with regard to title announcements at CES, I would look for more Blu-ray announcements from Fox (with MGM) and possibly Sony. There MAY be one or two more from Buena Vista as well.
On the HD-DVD side, Universal is definitely going to have some announcement news at the show. At least that's what they're telling me.
Warner should have at least a couple of announcements for BOTH formats as well, in addition to talking about their new dual-format disc.
Paramount, Lionsgate, Weinstein Co, New Line... not sure if they'll have much to say at CES, but they're wildcards. You never know. Paramount was "still evaluating" their catalog for high-def release on both formats when I last spoke with them, though they are working on lots of new releases. New Line says not to expect anything from them until mid-year, and they're still agnostic as to which format(s) they'll support. They may be waiting to see what happens with Warner's new hybrid disc.
For what it's worth, I've been told that a lot of the biggest catalog announcements for both formats are just waiting on the studios working things out with directors and authoring people with regard to creating new, more advanced extras - actually creating the extras and making sure they work. But a number of BIG catalog titles are being worked on, some of which have been announced already and many which haven't yet.
Best to everyone!
Thanks for the heads up Bill.
Any news when Apple's Mac w/BD player will hit the market?
Innerloop 01-06-07, 01:14 AM What's the deal with getting PIRATES (1) announced? Disney has been using this title all over their marketing materials and inserts since day 1, yet we have announcements going out to JUNE and no freakin' Pirates? I have to assume it is slated for first half of 2007 but they are waiting for some reason to announce it with bigger fanfare?
I can't understand teasing us with it and then not delivering for 8+ months... Unless they changed their plans after those advertisements went to press?

I can't wait to see what Lord of the Rings looks like on WHV's Hybrid HD 25 gig BR disks! I hope they use MPEG2
hd nOOb 01-06-07, 03:14 AM So basically there are a ton of movies coming from BD. So strong in fact that they can announce titles days before CES and STILL announce alot more good titles at CES?
So I am supposed to belive that the only new stuff will be what warner, paramount and Universal. put out will be, it for HD DVD. And there is nothing for an HD supporter before CES?

tsd2005 01-06-07, 04:42 AM NEWLINE TITLES FOR HD-DVD:
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
Blade
Blade Runner
Dark City
Friday
Rush Hour
Se7en
Spawn
The Mask
The Player
We should be getting dates for those tomorrow. They originally mentioned The Lord of the Rings as well, but then we heard 2008 from PJ, due to likely his law suit and him not wanting to play along. Heck, Sam Raimi's The Hobbit could come out on NextGen before LotR with the fit PJ is having.

jay jeetley 01-06-07, 11:03 AM heard there will be hybrid discs coming this summer too, from warner??? :o

Don't announce the big titles now: People complain about the lack of big titles.
Release basic discs now, and then deluxe discs with the extras (that need TIME to be created): People complain about double dipping.
There is always someone complaining whichever way they go.

I'm going to make a prediction based on the above two quotes in this thread...
New Line will "announce" those titles for HD DVD tomorrow, but the release dates won't be until 2nd Quarter of this year. The same titles will be available in BD, but not SPECIFICALLY announced at the show (for some reasons we've all seen here, BD Interactivity, True HD, etc). And, of course, some people on this site will try to spin this into New Line is HD DVD exclusive and Lord of the Rings is coming to HD DVD only by 4Q2007.
How's that for a prediction? :D

That sounds like a very reasonable prediction and one I agree with.
What about BD for these? Is New Line releasing both?
yup those movies are in both HD-DVD/Blu-ray pending release list, so nothing special really. and I think the poster, just took those titles from the list. I really doubt he has such information, given his false posts history

The lack of anything from the past 8 years from New Line certainly seems baffling.

both lists have great tittles. I will say that the any tittle from the list above is better then the movie "Click" which is a BD top seller.

That is a really old list (i think it was from CES last year? or some of it).
Both formats had promised more than they actually delivered (at least up til now).
As an owner of BOTH formats, I find Petras religious zeal silly. Its like if his kids life has been bet on BD being the eventual winner.
There is more to life, relax!
P.S Add the Bland, Wicky Woo,The "I beleive" guy and others.
You guys need to get a PR job at Sony or Toshiba.
Adam Tyner 01-06-07, 06:46 PM Is there a source for that New Line list? No.
tsd2005 01-06-07, 06:55 PM No.
It's very old announced titles from HD-DVD PRG in a PR.
So yes, there is a source.
You must figure that at CES they must be waiting to put dates to these titles.

Can you please reference when and where?
I cannot find this press release in any of the mainstream A/V periodicals nor in the movie industry ones. I also checked the well trafficked (spelling?) web sites, nada. I wasted 20 min. :(
Please keep it factual as possible. As much as I love to hear about new HD DVD releases, this thread states "CES announced titles" and not speculation.
Adam Tyner 01-06-07, 07:27 PM Can you please reference when and where? A PDF file on the HD DVD Promotion Group's website (http://www.hddvdprg.com/eng/list/list.pdf).
These titles were originally announced at CES in 2005 (IGN's coverage (http://dvd.ign.com/articles/577/577955p1.html)). The PDF is updated regularly but includes some titles that haven't been mentioned by any of these studios in a couple of years.
I think it's valid to look at the titles on that list as likely candidates, considering that almost half of the titles from Warner, HBO, Paramount, and Universal at CES '05 have wound up on HD DVD. Still, to reference these New Line titles without citing this or any other source makes it sound like inside information, especially after making the leap that they'll be announced tomorrow, and that's misleading.
Jackinbox 01-06-07, 07:33 PM NEWLINE TITLES FOR HD-DVD:
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
Blade
Blade Runner
Dark City
Friday
Rush Hour
Se7en
Spawn
The Mask
The Player
We should be getting dates for those tomorrow.
This list is totally bogus. New Line would never release a list with a title they don't even own. The other titles may indeed be in the works but this is not any list that came from New Line. I think New Line knows that they don't own Blade Runner.

Yeah I noticed that today. Blade Runner was a slip, I was going off an old HD-DVD PRG release that mentioned a lot of titles. Blade Runner will likely be mentioned as well, but on the Warner side. Since I know that Newline is supposed to make their announcements for this year, I just figured that they would be very likely to be using the initial titles mentioned. We should be getting dates for them.
Who knows maybe Newline will not announce anything because they want PiP, etc. in their releases. That could delay things until BD is ready.

I'm sorry you couldn't find it. It exists.
Also this thread has been all speculation since the OP posted his list of titles. No titles have been announced at CES yet. It's very possible we'll get a HD-DVD list in 25 hours.
RobertR1 01-06-07, 08:12 PM As an owner of BOTH formats, I find Petras religious zeal silly. Its like if his kids life has been bet on BD being the eventual winner.
Look up Nvidia/AEG scandal and you'll get a good idea of where the "petra's" of the world stem from.

Wow, good read, and makes sense. Hmmm, I wonder who the "creepers" in AVS are  *cough* *cough*
You always here how "These forums dont mean anything, the early adopters dont mean a thing" If thats true, why so much FUD,and bias?

The goal is to inflence the word of mouth, both in a positive and negative way.
For the positive, the purpose is it endlessly talk up your side and spam tons. Often the hardcore spammers (link after link dropping, skewing quotes to fit their agenda) will be mixed in with more technical folk to battle any knowledgeable folk that the forum population might look towards for input. Infact, often such people are recruited from within the sites as they already have an established reputation. Why re-invent the wheel right?
For the negative, the goal is to talk down the opposition and downplay their positives. The important thing about the "negative word of mouth" is it's effectiveness to ward off a buyer. While you might have to tell 10 people great things about a product and perhaps 1 or 2 out of the group will buy it, tell them something negative and likely all of them will stay away from it! Try out it between friends and think back to your situations and you'll know what I mean.
Marketing companies will sink to any level. Oh just so I don't seem biased, MS was an affiliate of AEG for their original Xbox. Infact, there was a nice testimonial they left on the site :)
Issac Hunt 01-07-07, 07:23 AM I suspect their are people from both sides on here who aren't what they seem. Paranoia makes me strong!
For anyone that wants the pirates movies in HD,I think your better off waiting anyway. You would be better off with a 3 disk set with all the movies when they finally do a blu-ray release instead of releasing them seperately. That would help prevent double dipping.

Grubert 01-08-07, 11:46 AM Josh, here's Paramount:
Babel (Feb. 20)
Flags of Our Fathers TBA
Payback (already announced)
Face/Off TBA
PARAMOUNT HOME ENTERTAINMENT TO LAUNCH 2007 BLU-RAY SLATE WITH HIGH PROFILE TITLES
Year Kicks-Off with Seven Time Golden Globe® Nominee, Babel
LOS ANGELES (January 8, 2007) – Following a well-received slate of Blu-ray releases in 2006, highlighted by M:i:III, one of the year's best-selling high-definition titles, Paramount Home Entertainment (PHE), a division of Viacom Inc. (NYSE: VIA), announced today that it will kick off 2007 with powerhouse new release and catalog titles. Leading off the high-profile films scheduled to debut from PHE is the critically-acclaimed Babel, arriving day-and-date on Blu-ray and DVD February 20. Directed by renowned filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu and starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, Babel leads the year's Golden Globe® contenders with seven nominations, including Best Motion Picture—Drama. Among the additional titles slated for release on Blu-ray in 2007 are Clint Eastwood's emotionally gripping WWII drama Flags Of Our Fathers. The epic film has garnered Eastwood a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director and features an all-star cast in its action-packed story of the Greatest Generation.
"We've been very pleased by the reception of our initial slate of Blu-ray titles from both the press and early adopters of the format," said Kelley Avery, President of Worldwide Home Entertainment, Paramount Pictures. "Looking ahead to 2007, we're enthusiastic about growing consumer adoption and excited about the titles we have lined up for the format."
Tapping into the studio's vast library, PHE also will debut a brand new director's cut of the fan-favorite action drama Payback. Starring Oscar® winner Mel Gibson, the new Payback: Straight Up Blu-ray disc features an extensive array of all-new bonus material and never-before-seen content including a behind-the-scenes look at director
Brian Helgeland's efforts to capture his definitive vision for the film. Also scheduled for release on Blu-ray is a new Special Collector's Edition of Face/Off, the sensational crime-drama starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. Directed by action-master
John Woo, the suspense-filled film earned over $100 million at the box office and celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2007. Additional titles will be announced throughout the year.
Where is Once upon a time in Mexico?? They had this preview going on forever, I was hoping they would release it soon. I thought it was a fun popcorn flick, and the 1st one was pretty damned good too.
well if this amount of new DVDs is all we get- this year- then i'll be purchasing my new Universal HD player -6-9-2010
db
Paramount is PATHETIC. As I've said before, the least bullish of all the studios for either format.
Ok, the fox titles announced today have me thinking about blu-ray finally in May
May '07
Master & Commander
Man on Fire
Edward Scissorhands
Predator
June '07
Independence Day
I, Robot
Cast Away
I'm a die hard HD-DVD supporter, but those are some titles I'm intersted in.
Lionsgate is releasing a copy of Dune? I don't quite understand that, unless there is another movie called Dune. It was already released by Universal.
Edit: Ahhh, I think its Frank Herbert's Dune which is the mini series.

That's a pretty weak slate of forthcoming releases and just tells me that their big eggs are going into the Q1 basket...
40 releases by the end of 2007? Well they already released 10 last year and there's another 21 so maybe some more day and date releases and that sounds about it. Very unconvincing..
the blob 01-08-07, 04:52 PM That i'm not disputing. I was always surprised but commend them for releasing a lot of their biggest catalogue titles so early on in the BD calendar last year. While Fox and Disney waited for the PS3, Lions Gate put their best foot forward and showed more conviction than probably any of the BD exclusive studios. Now the majority of the bigger remaining releases for the year are in that Q1 list. They've effectively stated that Q4 '06 AND Q1 '07 were the defining period for their BD strategy so to me it's unconvincing as far as their future plans go as to which formats they'll support.
Adam Tyner 01-08-07, 04:54 PM You have to remember that Lionsgate is a fairly small studio. A quick search on IMDB shows they have only distributed 291 (http://www.imdb.com/company/co0082557/) titlesSince AVS isn't being particularly responsive these days, I lost my original post, but Lionsgate actually has a pretty extensive catalog -- around 8,000 titles -- due to an endless stream of acquisitions and mergers (often with studios who'd already merged/acquired countless other libraries).
The list includes titles previously released by Vidmark, Trimark, Republic, Vestron, Artisan, Live, Family Home Entertainment, Hallmark, Cinepix, Sterling, Studio, Avalanche, Cabin Fever, and IVE. Maybe more than that.
It's a pretty strong outing on Blu-ray by LGF by any reasonable standard, though, including many of their highest profile titles.
CES 2007 IS A BLOODBATH

darinp2 01-08-07, 08:32 PM Since AVS isn't being particularly responsive these days, I lost my original post...On this point, I recently found that if I go to respond to something and the site goes down, I can usually get it to go by hitting Refresh in the same window after the site comes back up. Or when it is slow sometimes this works too. It may ask if you want to send the same data. I tried to respond to a PM last weekend, then site went down, I left the window open and then next day a Refresh worked to send what I had typed earlier. Hitting Back may kill the data.
... but Lionsgate actually has a pretty extensive catalog -- around 8,000 titles -- due to an endless stream of acquisitions and mergers (often with studios who'd already merged/acquired countless other libraries).I heard that they got rights to a lot of movies from Studio Canal.
BTW: One movie I am confused about is "The Departed". It isn't clear to me from reading reports from CES whether this is HD DVD only, or coming out on both formats on 2/13. If somebody could get clarification, I would appreciate it.

A list of titles coming out for the year are nice but dont you want to hear more about what advancements are to be coming out in its technology for the year?
I was hoping to hear more about advancements in picture quality, audio, features, BDJava, BDLive, etc
I want to hear more about why all these BD50 titles coming out are limited to shorter movies that dont even reach being 2 hours long. Is the PIP features really taking up this much space and how does that in turn affect the AV quality of the movies we are getting.
C. Lawrence Sims 01-09-07, 08:17 AM That's just an impressive and aggressive list by all associated with Blu-Ray. I was hoping that a cheap, Blu-Ray player (not the PS3) would've been announced by now but that doesn't change the fact that I have to get a Blu-Ray player by the summer. I love my HD-DVD player and the format but there are too many titles on the Blu-Ray side that I must own....just must.
Not on that list but will probably hit Blu-Ray are the first two Spider-Man films and X-Men and X2. And those (except Spider-Man) are a must own.
Please add the 4 hd-dvd's Bandai has announced for a summer release: Patlabor 1, Patlabor 2, Freedom, The Royal Space Force - Wings of Honneamise.

Blackraven 01-09-07, 09:25 AM You can probably add Rahxephon Volume1 for HD-DVD (in Japan only)
However, it still has to compete with GITS 2: Innocence (which its stellar 7.1 sound support) and Air.
Brave Story doesn't count as exclusive becuase Warner released it on both formats in Japan.
Still, I'd say 2:1 for anime exclusives in favor of Blu-ray.

Huh? How do you figure?
If we're limiting the discussion to exclusives, for HD-DVD you have:
Rahxephon The Movie
Patlabor 1
Patlabor 2
Freedom
The Royal Space Force - Wings of Honneamise
For BD you only have:
Air
Innocence
So it's 5-2 in favor of HD-DVD. Unless there are exclusive BD titles I'm not aware of?
Oh and also FFVII, forgot about that one, though I really don't consider it anime, though I guess it does fit the bill. So then 5-3 in favor of HD-DVD.
Do you have a news link to that announcement for Rahxephon?
It was announced a month or so ago, so since this thread is particular to CES, I guess it doesn't apply.
edit: but if you're just curious here's the link to the product page:

Oh here it is.
From the animeondvd.com site...
I found the link
http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=ZMSZ-3249
Release on March 23, 2007
Disc details:
NTSC Format
Layers: single-sided/dual-layered
Aspect Ratio(s): 4:3
Region Code: 2 (Japan, Europe, Middle East, and South Africa only)
Color
Encoding: MPEG-2
Subtitles: None
Audio Track :
Japanese: Dolby Digital 5.1ch
Initial comments:
It looks like HD-DVD discs for Japan are region-coded so there will use Region 2 (unlike in "Stateside" where HD-DVD discs are region-free)
And probably the use of MPEG-2 hehe on an HD-DVD format :D
I think it's sacrilege to use VC-1 in Japan :P. Thus, more than 90% of HD-DVD discs there use H.264 AVC while the other 10% or so use the MPEG-2 (like for Rahxephon)
I do agree though that with the count. It's sort of favoring HD-DVD 3:5 atm. :(
Geneon, please release Blu-ray title exclusives.

I posted that link one and a half hours before you did...And just to correct you again, the HD-DVD will not be region coded. It's just listed that way because some etailers like cdjapan haven't updated their systems for HD-DVD/BD, and instead everything is listed as if it were a regular dvd. But to reiterate, no region codes with HD-DVD.

Tell that to play-asia.
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-14-71-ye-49-en.html
For example, Space Cowboys and Under Siege are Region Free but Firewall, Reign of Fire and even Full Metal Jacket are REGION 2 titles.
Heck, World Trade Center and the Superman trilogy are region-coded.
No wonder HD-DVD is falling in JDM land. I guess HD-DVD only cares about the US market and leaves the JDM market in the pit.
Oh and regarding the anime thing...
Be aware though that even if the HD-DVD zealots can't spin the fact that Bandai Visual Japan is a bi-format company, not an HD-DVD exclusive.
Thus, Patlabor 1 & 2 will come to Blu-ray.
So if anime exclusives come into play, here's what I can say:
Blu-ray:
GITS 2: Innocence, Project PAPO, Air
HD-DVD:
Rahxephon
Of course, if you include the whole "enchalada", then you get around 3:5.
But if exclusives come into play, current count says 3:1 :D
EDIT:
So in the meantime, Bandai is NOT format-exclusive to any HD format unless there would be announcement coming from Bandai themselves stating exclusivity.
Tell that to play-asia.

Your passion for being wrong is impressive. Regardless of what straws you grasp at, there are unequivocally no region codes in the HD-DVD format.
Show me a press release from Bandai Visual announcing that they are releasing their titles on BD. Until they issue such a press release, they are an HD-DVD exclusive studio.
Project PAPO has also been released on HD-DVD.
You have no shame, don't you? Making up stuff left and right.

What the? You tell that to Japan.
HD-DVD is region-free elsewhere but it appears that some titles for Japan are enconded in region-2. Oh and please answer my question regarding the play-asia thing. And don't call them bias either, they're just an import store.
They've listed both region-free (Under Siege, Space Cowboys) and region-2 (Firewall, Full Metal Jacket and the entire Superman trilogy) titles.
Give me your answer on that.
For the Bandai thing, they've only announced that they would start giving support for HD-DVD. But does this say total support? You've gotta a link for that?
Remember, Bandai is still a member of the BDA. If they were an HD-DVD exclusive, they'd leave the BDA starting now, but has that happened, NO....because they're is no announcement for declaring exclusivity.
You automatically declare Bandai as an HD-DVD exclusive already? Where's you're link, bud? (and point out to me)
I admit though that Project PAPO is also on HD-DVD so it's bi-format.
But other than that, you failed to answer my first question and you automatically made an assumption on the second.
Making up stuff you say? Whatever man.........
George Montemayor 01-09-07, 11:49 AM Blackraven, the link you posted is that of a DVD BOXSET. The HD-DVD included is an extra. The specs reflect the DVDs and not the HD-DVD.

Yes, you are making stuff up. Region coding just plain doesn't exist in the HD-DVD format right now. If you don't believe me, and prefer to take as gospel a mistaken automatic listing on some etailer, pose the question in the insider thread to a BD insider. To talk or paidgeek. They will tell you that there are no regions with HD-DVD right now. Hell, everybody on this forum but you knows that there are know regions in HD-DVD right now. You're just completely, embarrassingly out of the loop.
And what in the world makes you think that Bandai has to release a pr saying that they won't support BD, in order to only put out there disks in HD-DVD? Don't you think it's simply maybe just maybe possible that, i don't know, they could just continue to announce and release their content only on HD-DVD, and never say one word about BD? Heck, they could tomorrow announce that they're releasing content on BD. I'm not saying it'll never happen, I'm not even saying it won't happen tomorrow. I'm simply stating the undeniably obvious. That at this point in time, they have announced HD-DVD release, and haven't announced and BD releases. You tell me, if a studio has only announced releases on one format, HOW THE F are you going to make the extrapolation that they're neutral??? Warner announced releases for both BD and HD-DVD at CES, because they're neutral. Paramount announced releases for both BD and HD-DVD at CES, because they're neutral. Bandai announced releases for HD-DVD only at CES. You tell me, what doesn't that make them????????
Oh look US HD-DVDs are region coded too.

Adam Tyner 01-09-07, 12:43 PM Oh look US HD-DVDs are region coded too. It's because they have a stock template for titles imported from the U.S.

Marc Alexander 01-09-07, 01:56 PM Tell me he's not a paid troll....
C'mon...there is zero proof that he is "paid". ;)
Adam Tyner 01-09-07, 04:40 PM There isn't a corresponding press release (http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Universal/CES/CES:_No_New_HD_DVD_Announcements_from_Universal/429), but apparently there's a flyer circulating around CES listing the following as coming from Universal in 2007:
Among the hits due in in 2007 are: 'The 40 Year-Old Virgin,' 'American Pie,' Bruce Almighty,' the 2003 remake of 'Dawn of the Dead,' 'Pride & Prejudice,' the original 'The Bourne Identity' and 'Inside Man.'
