View Full Version : JVC KD-AVX1 and KD-AVX2 notes
db999md 01-05-07, 11:01 PM Have not seen any posts here on these 2 units, of which I have owned both, thought I would give a post about them.
I became interested in these units due to the DVD-MP3 playback capability. I do not watch movies in the car - there is a $80 portable dvd in the back for my daughter. I am not crazy overall about ipod audio quality.
I have a JL audio A4300 amp with Focal TN52 front tweeers, Apine Type R front woofers, Focal rear deck speakers and a MTX 12" sub powered by the JL amp.
The KD-AVX1 has a 3" 4:3 LCD on the faceplate, does not play dual layer DVDs, and restarts the track when the unit is restarted after you shut your car off.
KD-AVX1 has some hiss between tracks which was not horrible but noticable, and was pretty slow in track to track navigation.
The KD-AVX2 has a 3.5" 16:9 widescreen LCD on the face, resumes mid-track when the car is restarted, and plays dual layer DVD+R for 8.5 gigs of MP3 per disc. I burned the dual layer disc with Nero 7.2.3 in ISO mode, nothing fancy required. Fits 127 albumns, 1600 songs on 1 disc. It is very hard to find this fact confirmed on the internet anywhere about this unit but I can definitely say that it plays DVD dual layer.
The KD-AVX2 has an internal dolby digital and DTS encoder for those interested int he movie decoding while the KD-AVX1 does not. THe AVX2 also plays DIVX.
Time to read the filled dual layer disc on the AVX2 when it is first put in was right about 40 seconds; restart time was the same, about 40 seconds. For a single layer DVD-R, time was half that, about 20 seconds for both initial insert and restart on a filled disc.
The AVX2 is a bit slow in folder browsing but not horrible.
If anyone has any questions about these units I would happy to answer them
Just bought the avx2. Just as you interested in the mp3 playback. Did not know about the dual layer capabilities and thanks for the info. What media do you suggest? I have not installed the unit yet. I have a 98 bmw 328i and I am planning on a whole redo. Bought a set of component speakers for the kick panels and the doors, 2 10" cvr kickers and a 700.1 amp for the trunk. I'm planning on taking the interior out and putting EDEAD V1SE2 in the doors, kick wells and the trunk area (sound dampening). Would be nice to keep in contact with you about this head unit I also bought the sirius sat unit for 50 bucks. let you know how that works. later E :)
LotusFan 02-18-07, 10:08 PM Does anyone know any tricks regarding how to get the reverse camera to display while driving forwards down the road?
I have found them to be an excellent wide angle rear view mirror, completely eliminating any blind spots, but there is no way to select using the software.
(Pioneer decks offer a rear view while the music continues to play.)
I am using the excellent iPod interface, so it must work while the iPod is the source.
I am thinking about attempting to rig up a switch, but I haven't worked out how to wire it just yet. (likely with a relay or two.)
thanks

i used generic media from the internet
lotus are you using the video input in the back?
If not you could use this and switch the souce to av1 ( could rename to rear)!
Just bought some verbatium dvd +r dl should get this week. Will let you know how they work.
On a sour note after installing the avx2 the radio worked fine but when inserting a disk dvd or cd the front and rear channel speakers didn't work. The only thing that worked was the 2 10's in my trunk. lol.
Called JVC they told me the wires were crossed... I said the wires cross when I put a disk in?!?.... JVC said yea!........ Then I just asked for waranty repair station. Luckly theirs one in the DFW area here in TX! Should get it back around Tuesday or Wednesday! :( This totaly sucked ass!! :(

dj4monie 02-25-07, 02:50 AM Im puzzled, why would you purchase a deck with a screen and DVD playback ability just to pay 7,000 songs on 1 DVD-R????
This TUES im going to get the KD-NX5000 which is based on the AVX-2, but has HD Navigation and was reviewed by CNET; 9 out of 10
I will watch DVD's (actually Divx) while Im on my lunch break or any time the car is parked.
Im interested in this deck for the following reasons -
Hard Drive Nagivation:
Only a few head units on the market provide HD navigation and don't rely on DVD or outboard units for navigation.
Single DIN installation:
I have a Dodge Neon SRT-4, I have a Single DIN Metra installation kit. The stock radio is DIN and Half. Dodge does offer a Navigation head unit, however it only plays audio CD's, no compressed formats and no ability to playback video. Plus for the price you might as well look towards the aftermarket which will give you alot more features and options for the same price or much less.
Multi Format Playback:
This unit will playback MP3, WMA, CDA, MPEG1, MPEG2 and MPEG4 (Divx), what more can you ask for???
Superior Sirius Display and Control:
Until the Pioneer DEH-P790/7900 or DEH-P690/6900 are released, nobody but JVC supports 2 line display with Sirius Radio. The SIR-JVC1 also puts the Sirius logo "Mongo" in the display, signal strength meter and sets the head unit clock by the sat.
All these features are important to me and they are all included in this head unit and no other. I can get Flip Out screens with similar features, non-existent or worst Sirius support and either have outboard Navi unit or they are DVD based and no audio can be played and have the system Navigate at the same time and not in this price range.
Fry's and Crutchfield have it in stock and are authorized retailers.
Ebay has several available for $300 under MSRP which is $999, but warranty issues are handled by the sellers and not by JVC.
When I get mine and install it, I will share it with all of you...
LotusFan 03-07-07, 07:41 PM This is such a great deck, no 2 of us seem to have bought it for the same reason!
I have *NO* plans to *EVER* put a DVD or CD in the slot. It's rear-view camera + iPod interface + form factor that sold me.
Anyhow, I want my iPod to continue to play while the rear view is displayed. (I also don't want to use just a simple switch and have my reverse lights come on while driving down the road.)
DaAkuma 03-13-07, 02:36 AM Hey, I was wondering something.... I know this deck (KD-AVX2) plays continuous CD's...meaning the song never stops it just goes right into the other 1.. But i only noticed this happens when you play a regular cd not an MP3.. The program iv been useing is Nero Burning Rom too make CD's But maybe someone can help or even let me know if this deck can EVEN play continuous MP3 CD's (Yes or No). If it does can someone direct me too a program that can burn an MP3 continuous CD.
Thanks alot.
Just incase you dont know what a "continuous CD's" is then let me let you know... Is just like buy a mixtape CD and best buy... the SONGS never stop they just keep going and going into eachother untill the Cd is done.. So can this deck play "MP3 continuous CD's"?

I did find that the NAV annunciation was way too quite. The music would mute and then I could just hear a little mumble. First I found an input level setting for the disc player and after putting that at -12 it sounded a bit better. Then after more searching I found a volume level setting for the NAV voice and a speed controlled volume setting as well. So it sounds much better now and it gets louder the faster you drive. (Sorry officer, I just wanted to see how loud I could make the NAV lady. Sir, step out of the car. ) I did not see a similar speed controlled volume setting for the disc player or music in general but the Modifry DCI takes care of that nicely. Not that I would have ever used it with all the music I’m going to be putting on the hard drive but I was a little disappointed that there is no HD radio. I just figured they’d be putting that in any $500+ head unit. Oh, and there is no pause on the head unit that I can find so far. There must be something.
tmcaree 04-03-07, 01:59 AM Hi guys, I live in Canada and was just wondering if the AVX2 i bought plays DivX as well? I notice on the Uk JVC web site the AVX2 has a DivX symbol on the front of the faceplate. Now, My faceplate has a "Sat radio Ready" symbol where the divx symbol is on the UK model?
Any help is appreciated

r3v3nant 01-07-08, 02:22 PM hello blast from the past (thread)... I just got an AVX2 for xmas and am going to install it in my 99 m3 vert (using the stock bmw amp + limited edition HK sound system with sub).. I have installed my own car systems before, but it's been a long while.. I also build watercooled PCs and such.. so I am pretty well versed in building stuff, but I am so tempted to (because of limited time) drop this off with a professional installer.. is it an easy install? comments?
r3v3nant 01-17-08, 05:43 PM I got my avx2 installed but am having an issue with the face-plate. in the mornings when the car and parts there in are cold, I was getting no display on the faceplate.. no lights on the buttons, no control of anything.. but the unit still played my DVD or CD just fine.. if I push on the face plate the lights and LCD came on, but if I let go again it goes off... just a tiny bit of pressure on the face plate would bring the LCD online. well, I could sometimes get around this by popping the face-plate off and on again, else I wait about 10 minutes until the unit warms up, then evertyhing works fine.. I have read random posts on other forums about this same problem but not a lot of solution help was offered.. I surmise the block with the row of copper contacts is not mating with the opposing surface contacts well enough.. I cleaned the contacts with electrical contacts cleaner, took the face plate apart and made sure the ribbon cable was in the socket internally.. when I put the face plate back tother it seems to have mostly fixed the issue, but it still does it occationally.. but I can always now seem to fix it by re-attaching the face plate.. still and all, it should not do this.. the closest authorised service center is like 70 miles away.. so I am looking to fix this myself.. I need to figure out a way to make the face plate attach a little more firmly so that contact "bar" or whatever has a tiny bit more pressure..
has anyone experienced this problem or have any ideas or suggestions for me?
