My local DVD rental store owner is telling his customers not to use disc cleaner machines because they scratch up the discs.

This could be part of the problem with Netflix rental discs. The word needs to get out how to properly clean discs.

I spray the eyeglass cleaner that you get from Costco for free on the discs and wipe across grain from the inside out with cloth.

Are you attempting to clean a disc to remove dirt/smudges or to re-surface a scratch?

If the former, then get a microfiber cloth such as the Fellowes brand and a liquid cleaner such as Maxell CDX-II. You can even use the cloth dry, if desired. After a dozen or so cleanings, rinse the cloth in water. You can even use a non-residue soap to remove the gunk on the cloth. Visible Dust makes an excellent pellet soap. The method I recommend is very safe. I use it on my own discs to clean smudges, remove lint, etc.

If you are out to minimize or resurface a scratch, try the following (but only on a rental disc). Buy some 3M plastic or autobody polish (it must be wax-free) and apply with a clean t-shirt, rubbing in circles. Don't believe the old wive's tale about rubbing radially. That does not remove scratches! Use a microfiber cloth to remove the powder residue (if any). I would like to give you a part number, but the stuff I use has been out of production for several years now, so you may have to visit an autobody shop to purchase their latest product. Ignore the crap you find in computer, game, or tv stores. It's junk, and will introduce more scratches than were on the disc originally. Especially stay away from Game Stop Disc Skip Fixer. This is one of the worst disc scratchers I have ever used.

I think their more worried about the resurfacing machines and filling machines that so many places now sell.

But as far as normal disc cleaning its a matter of doing it right, but I can understand their side. Its a lot more expensive to replace a HD-DVD then a DVD. Scraches effect HDDVDs a lot more..

I clean all of my discs, and haven't scratched a single one.
