From the Wallstreet Journal:

"About 695,000 consumers own either a Blu-ray or an HD-DVD player, according to Tom Adams of Adams Media Research in Carmel, Calif. But only about 25,000 have purchased stand-alone Blu-ray players. Another 400,000 consumers have Blu-ray because they bought a Sony PS3 game console. Meanwhile, about 120,000 or so have a stand-alone HD-DVD player while about 150,000 have an HD-DVD upgrade kit for their Xbox 360 game consoles, Mr. Adams says. He adds that those numbers are well in excess of the 300,000 DVD-player sales in 1997, when that technology rolled out."

BD is dead, if not for the PS3. Only about 25,000 stand alone BD players have been sold? Ouch.

I'll bet less than 10% of PS3 sales were for bd movies.

Its just the over all cost of the BD players. $200-500 more for a BD player.

The nice thing about the xbox add on is 99% are buying it for HD-DVD playback vs 10% on the ps3.

But in either case both formats aren't doing great. But in time they will as pepole learn about them and prices drop to more realistic average joe prices. But it very difficult to compete with a format that sell player for 27 bucks. And has a huge libbrary. 400 is lowest you pay for a next gen player. And you need a HDTV to see the major diffrences. Most pepole payed less then 400 for their entire TV why should they pay that just for a player and 20-30 a pop for movies. DVDs average 7-20 each

Not surprising considering PS3 are just lying on the shelf in my area unsold. Blu Ray players were doing the same thing when Samsung launched it's player last year. Not a good sign, of course we all know why, price.

And yet, wouldn't that 1% using the drive with the PC still be using it for HD DVD playback, so shouldn't that count towards 100%?
