I have been looking for some black velvet curtains and came accross these at walmart.com

Walmart (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3267137)

These look to be pretty decent for bt 10 dollars each. Anyoe have experience with these?

Also they are 84 inches but my ceiling it abt 7.5'. Wonder if these would work?

I wonder if these would also be a good alternative for border material. I hear velvet is pretty expensive by the yard, and $10 for a 54 x 84 peice seems pretty good to me.

Justin, I thought the same thing. My local Wal Mart has black velvet curitans, but, 84" is just not long enough and I don't want a seam. I did look in the craft / fabric section. They had a huge roll of crushed velvet for $3 a yard on close out, she said its a seasonal item.I just don't think it would look very good because of it being crushed. The regular velvet looked perfect, however, they only had about 1.5 yards left.

I was thinking the same thing when I read the OP as well... off to Walmart we go! :D

They were 25 dollars in store, and would not price match their website.

Tempted to order them.

If they had these in 95" lengths I'd be all over them.

I went and found the "Faux Suede" ones today and used that - worked reeally well IMO

They look too thin. On the picture I can see through them. Probably great against a wall, but not as a border.

Yes, please let us know. My screen is only 84" so these will work great as border material for me.

How hard is it to cut velvet on an angle? Maybe you could get two 92" long strips (long enough for the top/bottom of an 84" wide screen) by cutting diagonally?

Also, here is a real slick and inexpensive remote controlled motorized curtain system (http://www.smarthome.com/3142.html) for $89 that works with any standard traverse rod setup.

It would make a very nice side masking system and give a theater look, definitely upping the coolness factor. Sometimes products work very nicely for what they were intended for too. I even seem to recall someone actually using BOC as drapes to kill their outside light problems... go figure ;)

They had that black velvet curtain at my local wal-mart, and the thing that turned me off is how thin it is and the fact it lets light through.

up against something it might not be noticable, but i decided to go with the suede instead and it worked great :)

I used the black suede material on the quick frame I threw together for my test screen. It looks great and works fine, especially for paying something like $7 for three yards of it... I haven't really checked out the black velvet curtains in person.

I liked it because it wasnt too overly shiny which would cause the light to reflect off of it, that and it was 100% opaque

ok gang, quick post before i pass out. despite what UPS said, my curtains arrived today. These are not the same as the $25 curtains that I saw in store. it seems the picture is a pretty accurate indicator in regards to letting light through. up against normal light, alot of it gets through. I will post some pics tomorrow against natural light, etc to give u guys an idea of overall quality.

I was at Wally world last night, looking at all their fabrics, and of course the Velvet curtains.
These are not long enough for my border, but I did look at them, they are a bit on the shiny side, and they were 19.99

I looked at every black cloth they had, and I could easily see through all the felt they had, some were outright ridiculous..
They had some other black materials as well, but it seemed like a material called Lanacot(?) had the tightest weave in that store.

I haven't built a border yet, but I must do that soon, as the light spill is annoying(I swear, the spill onto the walls/ceiling light up the room!!).
I also have to paint the side walls(both VERY close to the screen, in like an alcove), and I am possibly painting the 2x2 ceiling tiles(drop ceiling) and grating flat black.

I am thinking that reducing the light spill will up the enjoyment VERY much, I hope I'm right, and NOT wasting time.

I ordered 12 of them to cover my walls with. I'll see how they do in absorbing ambient light.

I've got an RS-1 on preorder so I won't be able to test it out for a little while. Will let you know how it goes.
